eLinux CrashCam monitors potential truck disasters

Low bridge accidents top 100

A MAN IS USING a Web cam to alert authorities to a big problem with traffic that keep smashing into a low bridge near where he lives.

Brett Wasserman, who lives in Port Chester, set up the webcam called the CrashCam from his apartment because the bridge, he believes, could be a real hazard to people living in his neighbourhood.

In fact, since 1997, the bridge was hit over 100 times in the last six years and the locals want some re-routing to avoid a potential disaster.

Mr Wasserman has the support of the local police and the state Department of Transportation.

Here's a very recent dramatic screen capture from the CrashCam that Brett sent us, replacing the former image.

The view from the CrashCam can be found here. It's certainly a busy intersection, as we noted when looking at the images from Brett's apartment. The spot to watch is the arrow for the left turn, heading under the railway bridge.

Brett told the INQ: "It is a network camera/Linux box/web server all in a very small camera. It uses eLinux and the Boa web server and it just plugs directly into the network--so there is no server except for the camera. It's administered via a web browser and embedded CGIs, or alternatively via its CLI with telnet. Here's a link to the manufacturer's site."

The CrashCam is set up to capture and FTP pics every 20 seconds, Brett said.

The local newspaper here, has more news about the campaign. µ

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
