Iphone prize promotion was a mistake, says Molson

Canada brewer moosed message
Tuesday, 11 December 2007, 16:11

CANADIAN BREWERY, Molson, was tasting way too much of its own suds on this one.

SpokesMolson , Marie-Helene Lagace said it made a “mistake” when it listed the much-anticipated Apple Iphone as a contest prize, as part of a Quebec-only beer promotion. The device is not yet available in the northern wastelands.

Molson Canada’s had claimed the Apple Iphone would be launched in Canada by Rogers Wireless in January 2008. Furthermore, the company’s contest terms listed the Iphone’s retail value at $800 without a service agreement.

“The information published in our rules and regulations for our promotion turned to be mistaken,” said Ms. Lagace. “There seems to have been a misunderstanding with our agency.”

Molson has replaced the promised Iphone prize with an unnamed digital phone, basically whatever is available at the time the contest ends in January.

Rogers spokeswoman Liz Hamilton wouldn't say whether Rogers will bring the Iphone to Canada. She said Rogers wasn't involved in the contest and that Molson was speculating on a launch date.

It’s difficult to believe that the iPhone launch information was pulled out of thin air. Maybe Molson accidentally published details of an undisclosed Apple/Rogers contract a little sooner than the companies were willing to go public…

Canada a Wasteland ???

Being canadian, I'm not certain I enjoy my country being called "Northern wasteland", especially coming from a "southern coutry" that does not have many friends anymore and is losing more and more every day, I think a little more politeness is in order.

only in canada.....

Would it not have to be Rogers to take The iPhone? They are the only provider as far as I know in most parts of Ontario/Quebec that would already have the network for the iPhone, I doubt Bell or Telus would really wanna upgrade anything just to use a new phone on their network.

Iphone is a joke...

Iphone is a pathetic excuse for a mobile phone. Why even bother?
It has a functionality of a <100 € phone.

Northern Wastelands?

How a site like TheInquirer can call the entire Canada a Northern Wastelands? Just wow. You've just lost one reader right there and the credibility and respect from an entire country.

Canadian Brewery?

Molson is an American (Coors) company. So calling it a Canadian brewery is plain wrong.

Yes Canadian brewery

just because it is now owned by Coors doesn't mean its not based in Canada. Heres a little backstory for ya:

Pioneers in Canadian brewing since 1786.

John Molson founded Canada's oldest brewery on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal in 1786. Ever since, the Molson brewers have been passionate about brewing different beers for Canadians to enjoy. Today, Molson is now one of Canada's oldest consumer brand names and North America's oldest beer brand.

boo-effing-hoo...

the inq insulted canada...
grow a sense of humour or go read cnet or some other "serious" publication... i for one, enjoy the inquirer's rapier-sharp wit, even if it is directed our way once in a while.

molson sucks anyways... their customers deserved to be hosed by their cheap marketing gimmicks.

Iphone in Canada

Coors didn't buy Molson, Molson and Coors merged, so each compagny is 50% USA and 50% Canadian.

And for me, this site has no credibility as long as they call Canada "Northern wasteland".

My apologies from Canada

I would like to take this moment to Apologize to all the non-Canadians reading this article and comments.

It appears our IQ has dropped a notch and worse, our sense of humour has suffered greatly.

My fellow Canadians... your attention please...

I do believe that the headline indicating that "Canada is a wasteland" is simply the INQ's continuation of poking fun of an article subject matter by making the headline 'witty'... aka... smart.

This has been going on for years, and to you Canadians new to reading INQ or new to witt, I would suggest you go back and read all of the headlines to practice getting back your humour.

This headline, when read by someone without a funny bone, might find it insulting. Others, like me, with my funny bone squarely between my ears (hint: witt), read it with the meaning WasteLand = being wasted, as in drunk. It's an article on Beer (Canadian beer, mmmm). And so the joke is that we're all drunk on beer.

Of course, maybe they didn't mean it that way. But that is the 'fun' of reading INQ.

Now if you will excuse me, the shakes are back... must get bottle.

Keep those headlines coming boyz...

Cheers to INQ!

the Inq knows Northern Wastelands

Considering Inq central is further north than most of the population of Canada. I guess they speak with true experience of northern wastelands.
