Cities prevented from installing wi-fi

Lobbyists get their way
Wed Dec 01 2004, 08:07
THE GOVERNOR of Pennsylvania signed a bill last night which stops communities in the state from offering wi-fi services, the Wall St Journal said.

Governor Edward Rendell had been lobbied by Verizon and other big telecomms firms to restrict the ability of towns and cities to provide wi-fi locally.

But a bone was thrown to the city of Philadelphia after Verizon said it has struck a deal which will allow the local authorities to create wi-fi.

According to the Journal, Rendell has admitted that a clause in the act preventing towns from installing wi-fi wasa bit of a problem. But that didn't stop the moving finger from writing, and having writ, moves on... nor all thy tears will wash out a bit of it, in the words of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

Rendell pointed to the deal between Philadelphia and Verizon as providing a loophole for towns and cities to strike their own deals with the giant telcos. ยต
