Firm re-instates phone's internal antenna

A matter of Fractus

"MOST PEOPLE could be forgiven for thinking that the external mobile antenna had been relegated to the history books, but mobile TV has brought about its reappearance," claims Fractus' Alfonso Sanz.

Until now, that is. Fractus' miniature antenna measures 33 x 10.5 x 7 mm 3 and fits inside Sagem's latest handset to support the DVB-H mobile TV standard - called simply the myMobileTV phone.

Consumers simply don't like bulky external antennas but mobile TV raises major interference challenges caused by overlapping DVB-H and GSM frequencies.

It also doesn't help that people hold the phone in front of them to watch mobile TV rather than putting the phone next to their ear, either.

On top of this, the design of Sagem's phone incorporates a swivel QVGA design, which also causes TV signal reception problems.

But Fractus has cracked it for Sagem so no external antenna was needed. Indeed, Fractus offers mobile TV antenna designs for all three mobile TV frequencies: - VHF, UHF and 1.6GHz L-band.

The company name might not be that familiar but its designs are found in components offered by Samsung, Sagem, ST Microelectronics, Atheros Communications, CSR and Philips Semiconductors. µ
