iMetal Imac fReezes uP

Bloke bugged
Thursday, 4 October 2007, 17:20

MORE TROUBLE for the Apple faithful, it would seem. According to Apple Insider a number of customers have been hit by apparently random freezes on Apple's aluminium all-in-one computers.

User 3on complains on the Apple support forum that is brand spanking new Imac has been hit with an irritating bug. His 2.8ghz Imac will freeze after a short amount of time of less-than-demanding usage. It appears that the "bug" will not fix itself unless the computer's restarted.

Basic functions do still operate during the freeze, such as pausing music or activating the caps lock key, but it's impossible to switch between programs or control them in any useful manner.

It's reckoned by some that the issue stems from the ATI Radeon HD graphics hardware and its drivers, but there's no hard proof for this.

Apple is aware of the situation, say customers who have contacted the company, but so far has yet to reply with an official fix to the problem. Blimey. µ

Har

iMacs are notorious for dying.
The real reason is the heat.
The motherboards simply bake in that tiny space.

We had a lab with about 30 of them, and they would drop like flies. For a while, there were 1 or 2 a week that needed to be repaired. And it's not exactly fun trying to open one of those things up.

Still a lot easier than replacing a lamp on a cinema display.

yay

It is not just the new imacs, or ati video, the exact same thing has been happening for a few months on my first gen white macbook, which has intel gfx, of course.

Same problem at Best Buy

I've noticed this issue on the display models at Best Buy. The Geek Squad and I have an ongoing joke about how they "just work," and especially enjoy seeing them freeze up, or the frequent Safari crashes. For machines that "just work," their in-store presentation is less than flawless, and their interface to me still seems counter-intuitive. Window-manipulation is dreadfully clumsy. So far I'm having trouble seeing the attraction.

Sigh

Just got an e-mail from Apple that acknowleges the problem, suggests it is a software bug, indicates that they are working on it, and promises a fix will be posted asap.

I have just moved from Windows to Apple and must admit I'm a bit disappointed. That said this i-Mac and it's operating system is so far ahead of Windows that once the freezing problem is solved, I remain confident I'll love this machine.

whoopsidaisies!

Those darn users can' tell sh.. from shinola. It's not a bug, it's just an extended feature... just like bricking unlocked phones, selling players with scratchy displays. This is not voleware... this is genuine Jeeeesusware....

Pathetic

This is pathetic. You would think the people at Apple would test the computers before selling them to the public. We are now in the 21st century, when are they going to learn.

Lovely

Spent, or should I say wasted, another 1 1/2 hours w/ Apple's yellow short-bus crew this morning. Ghost fragments, random freezing, non-working firewire ports, and overheating continue to plague my machine. Was bounced between seven different employees, which I personally felt was done to test only my patience. "Aaron", a female tech specialist, was incredibly rude, yet didn't realize one of Apple's sales staff was on the line with me until he spoke up and demanded her name. I was then transfered to India (I think - or it could've been the local Kwik-E Mart) in which "Apu" justified my machine's failure because it is a "new model".

To top it off, after my latest crash, I get a pop-up box on my screen from Apple asking what I was doing prior to my machine crashing. I responded - "wondering why I spent $1700 on a piece of sh*t that doesn't work"

I'm taking it to my local Mac repair shop tomorrow, which after a short conversation, seems to be a common problem.
