Nvidia to follow ATI's monthly driver model

Almost five years later
Friday, 9 February 2007, 13:40
NVIDIAN VP of software, Dwight Diercks, revealed that Nvidia is about to try to fit in ATI's driver footsteps. Nvidia wants to have a monthly series of its Forceware drivers and hopes that it can get a monthly WHQL for Vista.

The only problem is that ATI started doing this from June 2002 almost five years ago.

Diercks also told PC Perspective that some stuff such as DirectX 10 SLI and H.264 support will be missing until April. Ouch. I am sure that Dell, Alienware, HP and others will be thrilled with no SLI driver for Vista that can run two DX 10 cards. WHQL approval is a big deal for manufacturers as Microsoft gives you money if all of your drivers are WHQL.

Terry Makedon of ATI - now DAAMIT - has challenged other companies to follow ATI's monthly WHQL driver update for many years now. Here is his famous quote: "In We (ATI) are the only company in the whole PC industry with a public commitment to post only WHQL certified drivers, and to do so 12 times a year. I challenge all other hardware vendors in the industry to match our commitment to quality."

Nvidia took up the challenge, but years later. Well, naturally, Nvidia is the leader and they don't copy anyone else's stuff. µ
