FIVE MAJOR players in the computer market have set up a group to push the European Union to further limit Microsoft monopolistic power.

According to a report in today's Wall Street Journal, Big Blue, Realnetworks, Oracle, Nokia and Red Hat are pushing for more competition in the operating system arena, outside the desktop market.

European Union authorities have already found Microsoft holds a monopoly for the desktop operating system, and want to extend the investigation into smartphones, PDAs and server OSes, the newspaper said.

The five firms have filed their application under the name of a group called the European Committee for Interoperable Standards (ECIS), and want the EU authorities to be represented in any future investigation.

ECIS will push the EU to take a more robust attitude against Microsoft, the newspaper said. ยต
