FORMER PC-MAKER maker Biggish Blue is having another crack at pushing its mainframe technology onto the world.

According to the New York Times, IBM is trying to position the mainframe as an Internet hub.

These hubs will be flogged for $100,000 which is about half the price the starting price of a mainframe. Apparently these will initially be made by and flogged to people in China.

While many had been predicting the death of the mainframe, IBM is now planning to introduce software tools, academic programs and support to bring in new business and new programmers to the heavy duty hardware.

This is coupled with some new tools which will enable traditional mainframe programmers to write internet based code like Java on the beast. IBM hopes that this will make the machine less esoteric. µ
