Linus Torvalds transforms into Cap'n Jack Sparrer
Thu Sep 21 2006, 16:21
IN THE SPIRIT of yesterday's 'Post Like a Pirate day', the cap'n of the Linux project Linus Torvalds announced the latest release of Kernel 2.6.18 in the style of an old sea dog.

On his mailing list he wrote: "Ahoy! She's good to go, hoist anchor! Here's some real booty for all you land-lubbers. There's not too many changes, with t'bulk of the patch bein' defconfig updates, but the shortlog at the aft of this here email describes the details if you care, you scurvy dogs." -- Linus "but you can call me Cap'n."

It is easy for Linus to jest, Linux fears no pirates.

The new kernel provides improvements to how Linux handles serial ATA (SATA) which is the latest thing if you are interested in storage [No.ed]. There are some improvements to SELinux with new per-packet networking controls called secmark now installed in the kernel.

Gone from the new kernel is a device file system for drivers called Devfs. This has been removed in favour of udev which is a unified driver model.
