Japanese concrete "will last 10,000 years"

Leaving puzzles for our descendants
Tue Sep 26 2006, 12:39
A REPORT in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said that Japanese firm Kajima has made concrete which will last 10,000 years.

According to this BBC site, the Romans invented concrete and left us buildings like the Pantheon - a bit ripped off from Greek ideas, but never mind.

But imagine 10,000 years down the road, some puzzled humanoids are faced with a huge skyscraper but no other evidence of homo sapiens circa 2006, because all the digital records are long since gone. Heck, it's hard enough retrieving data from eight inch floppy drives already.

Maybe they better inscribe the everlasting skyscrapers with some message saying "Kilroy was here".

The newspaper said that this 10,000 year old concrete contains a particular mineral and is treated to resist salt and moisture. µ
