YEARS AGO, wags would describe Microsoft as Big Green, playing with less-than-hilarious effect on IBM's Big Blue nickname and the colour of beautiful, crisp dollar bills.

Now, says Forbes, the company is green in the new, vogue-ish sense of being environmentally friendly. Founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen are listed among “the world's greenest billionaires", a typical Forbes list that combines its signature obsession with vast wealth with a sprinkling of mainstream zeitgeist.

Gates get the nod for his investment in Pacific Ethanol which makes fuel from corn; Allen is building eco-friendly homes in Seattle.

Also, listed are those perennial winning lottery ticket holders, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. The Googleplex HQ in Mountain view, California uses old pairs of jeans for wall insulation. (The INQUIRER hands used denim over to a charitable orgainsation, The Status Quo Fun For Befuddled Old Rockers).

Other tree-hugging tech Titans include former eBay president Jeff Skoll. µ
