Tongue to become computer controller

PC snogging
Mon Aug 25 2008, 08:17

BOFFINS IN AMERICA are hoping to come up with a new computer interface that uses the tongue.

While not advocating snogging your computer, the boffins think that they can build a virtual keyboard in your mouth with your teeth as a keyboard and tongue to operate it.

Maysam Ghovanloo, a Georgia Tech assistant professor who leads the team's research said that punters could have full control over their environment by moving their tongue. Philosophically speaking, no change there then.

The tongue interface is being designed for disabled people and will allow them to manipulate wheelchairs, manage home appliances and control computers.

Currently the design has been labelled grotesque, but is coming along, apparently.

The tongue has the advantage as an interface because it is wired up to the brain rather than the spinal cord and works when other parts of the body don't. ยต

We have been waiting 20 years for voice control,

if they can't deliver that then what chance for Tongue Control?

Would you want to share your tongue controller with a colleague? Only if I faniced the pants off them!

SWEEET!!

As a disabled person, I'd love to see this technology move into general availability quickly. I saw and used a similar device several years ago at an Abilities Expo, but it never made it into production, due to lack of VC. Trust me, being paralyzed from the neck down, makes using a computer difficult and frustrating...especially considering the lack of computer accessability products that are available, and at a reasonable price. As soon as a company describes a device as for the disabled, specialized for independence, or a medical product...then they move the $$$ way up. Bunch of arses. :(

Disability

Talking & language recognition computers are great, but what if you cant talk clearly or even at all.
Ever seen someone with complete motor function failure try and communicate? Or stroke victims who've lost the ability to form the mouth correctly, the list goes on... It's hard work and frustrating knowing they're trying to tell you something but not understanding, god only knows what it's like for the person with the disability.

If this work leads to someone having a voice to the outside world then it's worth every penny that its costs, a hundred times over.

Can you choose flavours?

Also could it incorporate a straw so you can partake of your favourite beverage while playing, surfing or programming Spockesque retorts into your speech synthesiser?

Speach

When is the talking computer coming, only been promised for ever. Which is easier using your tongue to type in 1 letter at a time or talking to the computer.

I like it...

My online porn experience just might get a boost from this technology.

I'll leave the details to your imagination.
