Sony, Microsoft begin battle of virtual worlds

Console capers
Thu Oct 09 2008, 15:43

SONY AND MICROSOFT are poised to do battle in virtual worlds.

The console kids both announced Second Life-style virtual environments at the Tokyo Game Show today. Both games show striking similarities to Linden Lab's creation

Players are represented by avatars which live a virtual life - engaging in relationships, going about day-to-day business. These can be personalised to look as similar (or different) to how the user looks in real life.

Sony's "Home" virtual world for the Playstation 3 will be released on November 19th, after its delay twice already. It will go up against Microsoft's Xbox 360 "New Xbox Experience".

Ryoji Akagawa of Sony said that around 24 game design companies would provide the content needed for Home - but didn't give much else away.

Game expert, Hirokazu Hamamura head of Japanese publisher Enterbrain told Associated Press, "You still can't tell what (Home)'s all about."

Microsoft's John Schappert said, "Our goal is to make the Xbox experience more visual, easier to use, more fun to use and more social...We focused a lot on friends and other experiences outside just playing games."

Let virtual battle commence. µ

RE: Funny...

Dear Mark,

It'll work on all XBOX 360s. There's a memory upgrade program for Core/Pro

Please

360's live sucks. i have both 360 & PS3
and PSN owns live in everyway first of all to play online on live YOU HAVE TO PAY playing online is what its all about for me, screw going to a marketplace, i find PSN's userface MUCH better, 360's is stiff and unusable. you cant even use Mods or play with PC users on Unreal tournament 3 on the 360 version, but you can on PS3 ^___^

Funny..

Looks like this UK sites has been invaded by a bunch of paid American Microsoft shills...

Suprised nobody has mentioned that the New Xbox Experience won't run on the cheapo Arcade and Core units, due to lack of a HDD... Whoops...

Well done

Who the bloody hell wants this nonsense? 6yo girls that play MyFirstPony sure, but apart from that? Also: will there be ponies in this nonsense?

Home is fantastic

In the beta, and it's VERY smart. The community is a little light, but once it hits open beta, it is seriously going to impess.

The 360 XNE on the other hand looks like it's been designed for 10yr olds, perhaps that's Microsoft's new target Xbox audience...

urrrr

Sure, Home bears a glancing resemblance to Second Life, albeit a homogenized one, but the NXE bears absolutely no resemblance other than they both have avatars and feature text and voice chat. Virtual world, NXE ain't.

My vote goes to X360

Well, new Live experience is available to ALL Xbox users for free. The service that you get when pay is linked to playing online in games. But the whole system is to wide to explain it here. I heard that Microsoft might stop asking for money at some point next spring. Anyway the services that you get when you pay to M$ is not related to new Xboxlive experience. Anyway(again,I know) buy what ever you fill you like more as long as it is Xbox 360. hahaha cheers (couldn't help it)

Not biased, just the facts my ass.

Last I checked, xbox live is $50 a year, or about $4.17 a month. And New Xbox Experience looks like it won't require the paid service anyway.

Live will Kill PS3

In N.America, live is free for the 360. Gold membership is about $5/month, not $15. About 3 normal chocolate bars for 24/7 unlimited play. I'll forgo the candy and take Live. Not sure why people even consider the PS3 for online anything.

$15????

try more like ~$4 per month for xbox live...and if you shop around, then about $3.33

plus, that's only for gold service (to be able to play each other online) - not for simple access to the marketplace and such.

My Vote is for PS3

Not being biased just the facts. From the two screen shots the PS3 looks much better and it will be free online. The 360 will no doubt be on the Xbox Live which requires a monthly $15 or so to even access it. While I don't do MMORPG on my PC this may prove to be a nice get away for my PS3.

Cool

Home would be awesome if I could invade it with Quake 2 grenade launcher and rail gun!

Multi Core Needs Updated Consule?

Just Yesterday at Hardware Store XBox360 with two free games was selling for mere $85. 3 cores in Your face. Cell in Playstation still holds bit more, yet it still is bit Kiddie like.

What World Needs Now is Set Top Boxes for Internet. Something Public can Understand Thru Ease Of Use & Enjoyment.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
