Samsung releases anti-virus phone

Kills germs not code
Tuesday, 15 March 2005, 09:13
IN ANY NORMAL context, you'd think a mobile phone honoured for its anti-virus properties would offer protection from malicious code. Well, the SCH-869 is applauded for its anti-bacterial paint.

The handset uses a paint with colloidal silver (ie sub-microscopic) properties. In essence it attacks the enzymes of any single celled organism. Which means bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Samsung claims that ordinary phones allow microbes to multipy - some as many as 46 times in a day. The specially coated SCH-869 kills 99.9 per cent of them.

The company claims the paint is not only safe for humans, it is also safe for the environment. Hmm. Didn't the blood of aristocrats who ate off silverware eventually turn blue?

Anyway, the technique has been honoured by Germany's IFD (International Forum Design). Significantly the actual manufacture of the device was carried out for Samsung by Aekyung.

The handset is only currently available in China and Korea. But it is a great gadget for those scared of catching Bird Flu. ยต
