CANON has unveiled the multifunction PIXMA MP480.

The printer, which powers up in less than three seconds, features a flashy 1.8-inch TFT display that allows users to easily preview and edit their photos. Pictures can also be printed directly from a digital camera, phone or Bluetooth device.

The MP480 offers 2400 x 4800 (colour) dpi resolution and is capable of printing up to 20 pages per minute. In addition, the unit automatically corrects red eye and optimizes brightness, contrast and colour.

Canon has also introduced the multifunction PIXMA MP190. This slightly cheaper model boasts a respectable color resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. The unit, capable of automatically scanning and saving images as PDF's or JPEG's, prints with accurate colour and significantly reduces photo graininess.

The PIXMA MP480 is expected to retail at approximately $100, while the PIXMA MP190 will be available for $70.

Yawn...

Sound like lackluster follow-ups to their predecessors. Passable machines, but unimpressive. The comparable Epson models produce a lot more bang for the buck. I still haven't forgiven Canon for dropping the individual cartridges from their lower-end models like these. They pioneer the system then forget about it.

Shop Smart

The higher end models are almost always on sale for not much more then the super low end models. The MP610 can be had for $140 or less online.

The MP610 is much better then the super low model.
