GIANT manufacturer Foxconn, which also goes under the name of Hon Hai, is to acquire big notebook ODM (original design manufacturer) Quanta, according to reports in the Asian press.

Quanta has a low profile because most of its business involves making notebooks for multinational firms like Dell and HP, and supplying "no label" machines for sale through the channel.

Digitimes, quoting a report in the Chinese language Commercial Times, said the deal is lkely to happen early next year.

This follows a year of consolidation in the Taiwanese market which has seen firms like Iwill being taken over by manufacturing giant Flextronics.

The Commercial Times reckons that the acquisition will be accounted for with a sales swap. µ
