Straits Times to switch to paid online format

A sign of things to come?
Monday, 14 March 2005, 08:40
THE ONLINE VERSION of the Straits Times is attempting to charge people for reading its online site.

From the 30th of March, Straits Times Interactive will charge US$6 a month to read its copy. A one year subscription will cost US$5 a month.

For that, you get access to all of the copy published on the site. For a similar amount each month you can get access to the INQUIRER's ad free site which includes all the copy on our site and additional early material.

Newspapers are paid for by one of two methods - subscription or through paid advertising. The problem that print titles have is the enormous overhead in terms of paper, printing and distribution.

Pixels are cheaper. Journalists cost the same. µ
