INTERNET CAFES are big business in China.

They are handy in a couple of ways. One, people can afford to use them rather than forking out for a PC to have at home. And two, government snoops can keep an eye on who's up to what in Webland and clamp down on dissenters.

Now, according to Chinese reports, the Culture Market Development Center of China's Ministry of Culture and the Jilin Provincial Netcafe Association have joined with eight technology firms to "guide the harmonious development of China's burgeoning netcafe industry".

The IT firms involved are AMD, Ruijie Networks, Vimicro, HP, Founder, Tsinghua Tongfang, TCL and Shanda. µ
