STALKER makes a lasting impression

Hardware Roundup Plus, how Penguins overclock
Thursday, 8 February 2007, 09:40
THE BIT-TECH CREW WERE left in awe after playing a near-finished version of the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. during recent Stalkathon. It seems that the world will get its first world-free-roam shooter since FarCry appeared on scene back in 2001. I remember seeing FarCry making a debut as a tech demo at ECTS 2000 with unnanounced GeForce2 Ultra and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. leaving an everlasting inqpression during GeForce3 launch in 2001. Yet, FarCry came to market three years ago. Still, can't wait for the game to come out.

Legion Hardware and X-bit Laboratories dissect ASUS Striker 680i motherboard. It seems that ASUSTeK has a winner on its hands, but the results are fluctuating on board-by-board basis, which is a shame for such expensive product. On the other hand, mobile professionals might take a look on Dell's mobile workstation, the M90 notebook.

Chris Tom came under scrutiny from zealots after showing a screenshot of air-cooled 65nm Athlon 64 X2 3600+ running at 3.1GHz, which was a majestic overclock of 1.2GHz over the stock speed. However, a validated screenshot is still MIA, causing teh kerfuffle. But take a quick look at Brisbane performance anyway. All in all, groundwork for upcoming K10 marchitecture.

TweakTown got a chance to try out the world's fastest DDR-2 modules from Corsair, which relate to the INQ's own review. This confirmed to Corsair that it can release even faster models requiring not more than 2.4 Volts. PC2-10K mark has been passed, 2007 will probably give us PC2-10664 (1.33GHz) and PC2-10800 (1.35GHz) modules.

If you intend to buy these sticks, you're probably assembling one nasty gaming rig and, for that, you need a mighty power supply which will feed all the components. Ultra's 800 Watt PSUs got an outing over at Bjorn3D.

The Tech Zone decided to stay in the drool zone with a review of Logitech diNuovo Bluetooth Multimedia Keyboard. Even though it looks awesome, I would like to have diNuovo's design on a G15 layout, perhaps with not as many function keys. It it would fit my Z-10 speakers perfectly. Our take on the keyboard can be found here and Z-10 speakers can be found here. For an alternative opinion, read CoolTechZone's Z-10 review here.

With a keyboard you need a mouse and Creative has come up with a gaming one. NotebookReviews reviewed Fatal1ty 1010 gaming mouse and gave it an interesting grade.

How do penguins overclock? First up, they wait for a snow blizzard. These Penguins from Michigan took full advantage of Mother Nature's wrath to overclock a Pentium 4 system to heaven's high. The article ends differently than Happy Feet, so be warned.
