Spam shrieks of World War III

Malware apocalypse now
Friday, 11 July 2008, 23:18

NO DEPTHS of depravity are too low for spammers, it seems. Spam hitting email in-boxes claims that the US has kicked off World War III by attacking Iran using nuclear weapons.

Anti-malware security vendor Sophos issued a warning Wednesday that it's caught spam emails with apocalyptic subject lines including "Third World War has begun", "20,000 US Soldiers in Iran" and "US Army crossed Iran's borders".

The emails contain links to a malicious webpage displaying what looks like a video player showing a nuclear mushroom cloud above the following text:

"Just now US Army's Delta Force and US Air Force have invaded Iran. Approximately 20000 soldiers crossed the border into Iran and broke down the Iran's Army resistance. The video made by US soldier was made today morning. Click on the video to see the first minutes of the beginning of World War III. God save us".

Merely receiving and reading the emails themselves won't infect your computer, according to Sophos, but it says "visiting the link contained in them, or trying to watch the video, is definitely a bad idea."

By clicking on the email link and visiting the webpage, users are exposed to a malicious JavaScript that Sophos calls Mal/ObfJS-AY. Gullible users who try to view the video might have their systems infected with a Trojan horse, which Sophos identified as Troj/Tibs-UO.

Graham Clueley at Sophos said, "People, especially those with loved ones in the Middle East, may rush to watch the video without engaging their common sense. Everyone should ensure they keep their anti-virus protection up-to-date and never follow links in unsolicited email messages." ยต

Misdirection at its finest

I can see it now: "The US has deployed nuclear missles over Iran. Our video, taken by a US soldier, below proves this. All we ask is that you donate to our cause to help the misplaced families. You can enter your credit card information below."

Hah.

While you wouldn't expect these people to be anywhere near factual...

1st SFOD-D ("Delta Force") has about 200-250 'shooters'. That's a bit shy of 20,000. Why you'd use a lightly armed special operations force to smash through Iranian armored divisions, another curious question.

Um, how about peace talks?

I think the easiest way to avoid WWIII is to get pissed every time a news organization or individual talks about going to war without even considering the alternatives.

Iranians are not monsters, and the US is not a place filled with super-special people.(Nor is Europe or Britain, but I get the impression that people are a lot saner over there)

If there are any Iranians out there, please, for everyone's sake, take the abuse for a little longer, at least until the next US president is decided. If it ends up being John McCain, then I've wasted your time, but I'm hoping it'll be Barack Obama, not because I really like his policies, but simply because he's less likely to get everybody killed.

Of course, the individual won't go into office until around the middle of January, but if it's Barack Obama, then you can rest assured I will be one of the people involved in letter-writing campaigns to undo the damage that George Bush has done.

To any Islamic people reading this, and especially potential jihadists, PLEASE be patient. I don't want to be Islamic, but I also have no desire to persecute other religions.
