BUSINESSES and boggers are fuming after Microsoft's glorious updating system forced them to download its resource hogging Windows Desktop Search 3.01.
The moment that Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is downloaded it sniffs through your hard-drive and indexes it at the speed of an asthmatic tortoise dragging an unwilling elephant to lunch.
Admins throughout the land are seeing all their clients slowing to a crawl and file servers are unable to cope with the load.
Window Server Update Services is widely seen as the culprit. Even if admins had configured system to "install updates" only for existing programs, the Update Services software decided they needed it.
One bogger moaned that when he removed it, after he rebooted, it came back.
This is the second time that Vole has been in the headlines for installing unwanted software without telling anyone.

We have yet another proof that Windows is the biggest virus of all. The nitpickers will probably want to restrict that to Windows Update.
No matter. I have XP SP1 running fine with a good antivirus (not Symantec) and a router with a hardware firewall.
I've turned off and disabled Windows Update ages ago. Never needed it, never been bothered by it.

I think people would be happier if they would push a new WDS revision that included "remove" functionality. They're leaving it with people having to script their own solution or uninstall manually.
Imagine that the dealer of you car sneaks into your garage at night, replaces your car's engine with a scooter-engine and sneaks out again. When you come and complain to him, he tells you "It is for your benefit, so accept it... " He wouldn't survive a day in court...

Well now replace the car dealer with microsoft.... How can it be, that they can do whay they like with inpunity?

It never seizes to amaze me how Microsoft can get away with things that would put any other out of business...

WSUS updates whatever the admin has told it to update. To install, an update must be approved for installation. You can also approve updates for detection only.

Every update is marked as being in a particular category; you can have WSUS automatically approve particular categories for installation.

The Windows Desktop Search update is marked as being in the 'Updates' category. The admin must have either approved the update for installation manually, or set WSUS to automatically approve this category. The default is to automatically approve only Critical Updates and Security Updates. Automatically approving everything is madness.

Annoyingly, when you move a WSUS 2.0 database from one server to another and reinstall WSUS to move the front-end services, it resets the automatic approval categories. I accidentally turned on install approval for Update Rollups and suddenly a lot of people got IE 7.0 when Microsoft released a revised update, which I'd been resisting because some of them are web developers continuing to need IE 6.0.

The update is marked 'Detect Only' on my WSUS system but I can see that all of my desktops are showing the update as 'Needed'. I think MS have screwed up their detection logic on this one.
I don't know why people are complaining about getting such wonderful extra FREE software from Microsoft. They should be grateful to get things for FREE, without Microsoft forcing them to pay for for these valued updates.

Imagine if Microsoft pushed out a FREE upgrade to Vista as part of an automatic XP update? How would you like to come in in the morning and find all your XP machines running Vista?

So be thankful for these small favours that you get for FREE from Microsoft, and imagine how much worse it could be...
I find it hilarious that y'all run into this sort of bullsqueeze from M$. Personally, I implemented an excellent solution to Mr. Bill's crapping on users a few years ago- I have stayed with Windows 2000 Pro ever since first using it in 2001-2002. Does everything I want or need, isn't a bloated POS like WinXP and even worse, M$Vista, and never phones home for a lard injection like the newer OS's. Matter of fact, I still use M$ Office 97 as well. Old school rules!
I checked this out, and on my system at least, it's showing as an optional software update. That means I don't have to download it or install it.
all you have to do to stop it running is remove it from the startup group, under start/programs/startup.

i also disabled the "windows search" service for good measure.

reboot, and your good to go
I run WSUS and had no problems declining the update. I don't see how anyone with WSUS could have this install automatically.
