Maybe the author should research before writing an article. Netvibes didn't have any exponential growth. If anything there growth was organically stable with a few percent increase each quarter. They had a growth jump in late 2009 (probably because of a distribution deal) and are growing stronger since then. The term "exponential" applies to services like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook or any other service that has viral potential.
