I pay for internet connection 1meg up and 10meg down. I expect my traffic to pass uninhindered from my machine to and from destination without packet sniffing but this doesn't happen. The only way to prevent bresnan from stealing searches from the address bar is to modify mozilla to use googles encrypted search service and no, this has nothing to do with dns. I guess, if the businesses are sniffing packets and replacing search strings, whats to stop me from sniffing packets and replacing other strings such as obama with jack*ss??
Wonder what all the neutrality naysayers are thinking now...
People against net neutrality always argued that "QoS" wouldn't be monetized. That traffic would be controlled in a fair fashion so as to keep access available for everyone.
Yet here is the result. This is just the beginning. I bet you that every major internet provider is licking their chops at the prospect of increased income.
And so eventually the internet will get fragmented into packages that the users can choose from. Site providers will have to subscribe with the internet providers in order to show up. We will have to pay for it.
And the little guys, the ones that most of the time bring up innovation to the scene will get squished. Unless we move and create enough noise. The only way to do so is to contact your representatives, the FCC, and your friends. Let them know whats happening and how you feel about it. I know I will.
This is what they had to Tweet:
"@NYTimes is wrong. We've not had any convos with VZN about paying for carriage of our traffic. We remain committed to an open internet."
