Regardless of his intentions Gary Mckinnon still broke the law. If you kill a cop because the cop is beating someone up, should you be let off the hook because you were helping someone against a violent cop? Absolutely not, you commited a crime and you should be punished for it.

Mckinnon gained unauthorized access to government computers which is illegal. It doesn't matter how easy it was, it was and still is illegal. Trying to say he should be let off easy because the US government has shitty security is like saying a thief caught breaking into a store a night should be let off easy because the door locks were too easy to pick!

60 years is excessive I will admit. You only get life(25 years) for murder. However, I think its safe to say 5 to 10 years IS acceptable for this offense.

The big disparity you refer to in between the two sets of extradition requirements effectively disappeared when the US ratified their end of the deal in Sept 2006 and the instruments of ratification were exchanged by the US and UK governments in April 2007.

In addition, it's worth noting that the US is not the ONLY country from whom we do not demand prima facie evidence. There are others. So it's far from being the "the US are big bad bullys" situation that McKinnon supporters try and portray it as.

The US have happily extradited criminal suspects from the US to the UK in line with their obligations. Oh, except they don't get nearly the same degree of publicity, do they?

And even assuming that the US DID have to provide prima facie evidence that McKinnon committed a crime, they wouldn't have any problem doing so. Even McKinnon's own very public statements about what he did would likely be admissible against him. So let's not pretend that there isn't a truckload of evidence against him and that there isn't a case to answer.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion of the case, but how about making it an informed opinion, as opposed to the "everybody knows that..." crap that seems to be sloshing around at the moment, mostly as a result of the (admittedly good) PR campaign that the McKinnon camp has orchestrated. But just because it's a good campaign doesn't make it right.

Bear in mind that although it's written from the skeptic point of view, the author actually starts out asserting that at the end of it he believes that McKinnon should NOT be extradited.

While I agree that 60 years is a very long time (isn't it pretty rare for anyone to actually serve a full sentence?), he did hack into United States government computers and view classified information, which is obviously a very egregious crime, regardless of the apparently amazingly poor defenses of their computer network. That huge sentence having been said, I hope he gets off with a slap on the wrist. By the way, have you ever been to a British prison? Didn't think so...
