It's hard to make heads or tails of this right now, but I can say one thing to anyone who thinks the internet is not headed towards open interoperability: life will only get harder unless you start using that brain.
Skype would only be shooting itself in the foot to do this. All major players are working on implementing open standards in some form or another. If you are going to use SIP, don't be surprised if someone thinks you're trying to "be open and play nicely with others." And then don't be surprised when they call you out for being so stupid as not to see the benefits. Competition is healthy, spread the word.
