Regardless what is said, I do think you might have too much apple 'news' on the inq now, and when you lie down with dogs you wake up with fleas don't forget.
Well, like an earlier poster, i too thought the emphasis on Jobs' recovering honour to be slightly off, given the Apple Newton(and i believe the whole PDA concept) was something Scully attempted to make fly...though it is noted(almost subliminally) in the article...still...opinions are like a**holes eh ...nice if you get paid for them though
Buying ARM makes them a competitor to Intel/AMD. Would not be a wise move considering Apple relies on chips from Intel.
I also dont believe Apple is ready to use AMD processors but is probably throwing that around to get cheaper chips from Intel. If they use an AMD chip for something it must be that Apple has a netbook in the works. I dont believe they would be sampling bulldozer to replace the i5/i7 chips.
I could see Apple using AMD/ATI graphics and with that blow to NVIDIA and its stock prices eventually scoop up NVIDIA. But not at todays prices.
Now Apple has the money, and buying ARM back might be a matter of honour even if it costs $8 billion.
It may be that even Apple shareholders might balk at their cash being used to satisfy a personal whim. The board of Apple does have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders.
Anyway, I'd heard that IBM was going to buy Apple, and that Budgens was going to buy Tesco. Man down the pub told me, must be true.
Maybe you should try reading an article, before you start typing and look like an idiot.
You said "Just to clarify a few things. Steve Jobs had nothing to do with the Newton flop. If you recall Apple History, John Scully had ousted Steve at this point from his own company and it was John's pet project/baby."
Nick said "While Jobs was not around for the Newton,". Third sentence into the paragraph. So he did "clarify" that Steve Jobs had nothing to do with the design or failure of Newton.
So what did we learn? Reading is better than skimming. If you can't bother to read/comprehend, then don't bother to comment.

At that point in time Steve had NOTHING to do with Apple and he was working on NeXt which as we all know became the future of Apple since Copeland was a disaster. Steve was assembling the pieces that would turn out to save Apple, go figure.
Of course Steve has a huge ego and hates to have losers or lemons associated with his name. He actually has a very good track record. NeXt (from a dev./intellectual point of view, Apple and their mega billions in the bank now and PIXAR.
Why buy ARM? That old saying comes to mind, "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" In this case not free, but for a fee of course. With Apple buying the engineering talent with the pick up of PA Semiconductor he greatly expanded his in house custom ASIC design prowess.
Also a considerable amount of patents came along with the deal. There are many unique and innovative things Apple can bring to the table to further set them apart from the mobile and PC crowd.
All in all Apple continues to execute and be in the best position they have ever been in with what is now their 30 plus year company.
All this coming not from a fan boy but rather a Microsoft certified tech in the trenches who supports both platforms on a day to day basis.

"This RISC chip was first seen in the Acorn PC, and Archimedes and Apple did get a fair bit of mileage out of it."
Archimedes was the name of the first Acorn PC you pillick. Not a company. ;-)
It was amazing seeing just how fast the ARM chip was in 'Desktop PC mode' running RISC OS.
Incredible how productive you could be once you got rid of decades of X86 history.

What's that saying about glasshouses and stones?
Aurien,
You seem very upset. Perhaps you are Nick's fan boy?
LOL Have a good day.

Hi Nick,
Just to clarify a few things. Steve Jobs had nothing to do with the Newton flop. If you recall Apple History, John Scully had ousted Steve at this point from his own company and it was John's pet project/baby.
At that point in time Steve had NOTHING to do with Apple and he was working on NeXt which as we all know became the future of Apple since Copeland was a disaster. Steve was assembling the pieces that would turn out to save Apple, go figure.

.....this kind of news is fun and it's been great to see my investment go up nicely.
However, the phrase "gone through the roof" was a bit over the top. It went up about 7p.
Had they gone up say £200 a share....
Well I wouldnt be sitting here nitpicking.
