Australian no more.

Born in Australia, raised in England, now an American citizen; while he might have dual citizenship, he's the world problem now. ;p
But dose it matter(the paywall), is there anyone who reads both the inquirer and read his sites?
And as a previous commenter stated, most N.C. news is just as recycled as any news sites. Just watch fox news, its like twitter for news, no depth, pure bias and knee jerk reaction. What ever happened to unbiased investigative journalism and free media.
I think the journalist of the world should unite and create a site with real investigative journalism, I'd almost pay for that.
Simple rule: if a site loves apple, its captive media, move on or suffer the consequences.

Thank goodness he's getting old

What a pain it must be for Murdoch, not owning all the newsfeeds in the World. Of course, he's done his best to fix that.

"Think of it as evolution in action"

(As Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle used to have some of their characters say when witnessing exceptionally stupid behaviour).

I already get my serious political comment and news from Counterpunch and other professional sources (such as Craig Murray's blog). I'll miss Matthew Parris and a few other journalists, but on the other hand I won't see David Aaronovitch's name any more.

Heh

Murdoch is such a funny man.

Did you hear that he loves the new iPad? A huge PR blow for Apple.

Unfortunately, He's right.

Murdoch is being the most aggressive in this push, but the others will all have to follow or fold.

Newspapers are a dying media, and there is no free-access web model that can sustain mainstream news services.

To survive, all of the mainstream news services will have to go subscription based, at some level, or exit the market.

There won’t be alternative free news service (other than bloggers) to turn to, as web-based advertising revenue simply can't pay for journalists and other overheads of mainstream news services... no matter how much of the market a site captures.

This is one of the reasons the mainstream news sites are so enamoured with the iPad at the moment, as they see it as a platform for delivering their subscription content.

Pay news

I won't even buy the local paper so why would I want to pay for net news ? In fact I'm still trying to think of ANY NEWS WORTH buying.

I spend my money on things that benefit me or things I NEED to survive and news does not fit any of those needs !

Ian Smith is right about UK Election and Conservatives doing a deal with Rupert Murdoch.

David Cameron's Conservatives have already said they are going to overhaul the BBC and cut it down to size if elected. That bought them backing from The Times, The Sun, The News of the World, Sky, Sky News etc all are owned by 1 man, Rupert Murdoch, an Australian who runs most of Britain's media.

In return for this massive media support David Cameron will shrink the BBC, keep an eye on OFCOM and assist Rupert Murdoch's dominance.

David Cameron and Rupert Murdoch together is like Berlusconi in Italy, except split into 2 people. Corrupt, dirty, and not in the interest's of the people.

Rupert Murdoch is not happy with people paying £35+ a month to watch football matches, he wants to charge us more.

OFCOM have said he has to lower the price of sports channels, lol, by £3 a month.

I wonder how many more decisions by OFCOM will go against RM if Conservatives win?

I don't mind who wins, but I do mind when a party puts 1 man's business ahead of it's 60mil population, and he doesn't even live here.

That's not the problem

The problem from all this is not that News International content will disappear behind a pay wall. There is little there that's new. Most comes off the wires and the only addition is the Murdoch slant (eg lies).

No, the problem is he's going to be going after the BBC and trying to close down their free online news service. His timing is suspiciously close to the timing of the UK election and the passing of Mandelson's retirement package (aka the Digital Economy Bill). Either via that bill or some future stickup with the Tories, he's looking to get it to close - maybe via a spurious copyright claim. The new bill forces ISPs to prevent access to a copyright infringing site after all.

Frankly it stinks to high heaven that he knows something and thinks he can get away with it. Don't be surprised when the other shoe drops - he's smart enough to not do dumb things, he has a lot of connections and muscle over politicians, and he's fundamentally an evil little ****.

Thanks, Rupe!

The world will be much better off when fewer people will be able to read Murdoch's right wing disinformation sites.
Best idea he's ever had!

AD Free

Anyone read, if you pay the old goat, will his online news be ad free, or will I still have to pay to see all the ads. I might, that would be a big might if he can guarantee an ad free newspaper cheap. Then again he doesn't know what the word cheap means.

goodbye mr. murdoch, and have a nice long stay behind the paywall, we won't miss you.

Good boy Murdock

Good boy Murdock, shut your site off from non paying customers. Please get a hold of all your other Corporate friends while your at it so we can get the net back the way it was. AD free without the pretty pictures flashing and dancing around in front of my viewing space, which I pay for. If you want me to look at ads and look at your media then you pay for my INTERNET connection, otherwise STFU and get a life.

Murduch forgot something...

It seems Murdoch forgot that he's in a capitalist fee market system and people will go where they get the most bang for their buck. After their free news becomes inaccessible, due to cost, other news organizations will rise up to replace the old.
