Browser Usage

Microsoft spin/lie? I am so surprised. ;)

BTW I administer a small site www.ausphotography.net.au and our March 2010 usage was:
Firefox 48.4%
MS Internet Explorer 35.7%
Safari 10%
Google Chrome 3.9%
Opera 1%
(83,812 Visits, 3,602,917 pages, 11,602,621 hits)

Being a photographic site we have a high number of Mac using members.
We also encourage our 7,000+| members to use almost anything but IE.

I See The Point

I do see the point. Some people that want more privacy in browsing may want to type in a URL and not have it go through Google. There should be a way to separate the two if wanted. You would think incognito mode might do this, but I don't know.

So in this case I see the point. Your URLs are being aggregated (at least) and perhaps with Chrome you have no choice.

I personally would like the separating and if there is an option to toggle that would be fine.

Google doesn't care about privacy

Of course you have less control over your privacy in Chrome than other browsers. Apart from what has already been mentioned, Chrome provides a unique tracking id, makes it impractical to disable javascript and difficult to block content. There are hacks you can do to get around that but it's obvious that Google wants to obstruct users. Chrome is browser for wide-eyed naive Google fanboys.

Outrageous!!

This is outrageous. I think no search provider should collect any information I type in a search bar until I press enter. No one should know what I was thinking of typing only what I actually typed. I could be thinking of or typing anything!!! I could type out all my bank details and then only at the last minute realise that that's probably not worth it. What then Mr Google?

After this I'm seriously considering indexing the internet on my PC - no sending my search requests out onto the internet thank you very much.

Why won't someone think of the children!!!

Real news:

Intel is ending Itanium support.

The Inq hasn't had a new article in 4 days. What gives?

Why you all suck

So, you go into a sit-down resteraunt a few times and after a while the watress remembers what you often order. Or you get fast food and the computer system records all the orders so it can give pre-emptive cooking orders to the burger flippers.

Do you go online and complain about how the evil resteraunts are recording your orders and memorizing what you like to eat and calling you 'hon' while they pour you a coffee?

eriously folks, they want to offer up some directed advertizing and maybe include some tailored 'featured results' on the search page. Whoopidie-doo.

@ Phil and jeff e:

"LePage continues by saying that because Internet Explorer 8, which of course has a long bloodline rich in infallible bulletproof security, separates the search and address bar, this is somehow more safer for the end user."

It's rather telling that you both sweep past the accurate sarcasm about IE8 without the least objection, to seize upon two words that may be either a paraphrased quote (LePage said) or intentional humor. Simplistic diversion no longer works, guys.

Proves yet again that monopoly M$ delivers the lowest quality products, even in their trolls.

"More safer" is a cringe worthy grammar mistake Lawrence.

Microsoft said WHAT???

The company that has, as corporate policy, had all needed information about you, sent to them, without your knowledge, was forbidden on top secret installation because it kept calling home and sending information, singlehandedly created the boon in computer virii, but being such a lousy OS for said security (and all their other software)...

DARED to castigate a company for disrespecting users' privacy?

Active X and what-ever other names that they wish to disguise it as is not a sieve but a sinkhole of violations of users privacy... and their wood heated cauldron calling a brand new stainless steel and glass kitchen black...

They are upset, that their poorly functioning or accepted porn search engine (which I know better than to use, is beat by google's (which I wish I didn't have to use...

At least I don't have to use their 'Black Hat's open invite to my life' software any longer (Linux, you know)

All net connected software is subject to attack.. But, They did Score the Pulitzer Oscar on being the best at it... At being attackable... Black Hats do Windows attacks if they don't feel up to a challenge... Makes the day go faster.

well at least something works

Once, when on the phone with my ISP's tech support, I entered a few choice expletive swearwords into IE's address bar, and then I was astonished when the tech support person commented that she saw them and took offense.

Anonimity

Their is a fantastic program that takes care of anything you type in any program you use, its called Key Scrambler. Whatever you type it randomly picks other letters or symbols and replaces them..It was designed for key loggers but works with any program you type into. So any program that is sniffing around gets a bunch of garbled text.

Alternative to the big two

use startpage.com as your search provider if your worried, they have an https page & collect no user data.

I have been using them for a while and am happy with their results/service.

Cry Babies

I love how the writers for this site are constantly crying and bitching about Microsfot, yet when you enter this very website you are bombarded with Microsoft pop up and ads... If you hate them so much, why do you take their money you fags??

Japan

Japan browser share market is approx this

PC based
90% IE
10% Other

Maybe 50% of people or more don't even use a PC. They use a mobile phone.

What this tell us is basically the Japanese are using whatever was preloaded onto their machines. Interesting non-point is they do however install yahoo/google toolbar plugins.

It's hopeless. Firefox / Chrome / Safari won't be taking over Japan anytime soon.

Chrome terms of agreement

The terms of agreement for Chrome bother me more than anything else... The last few lines in the agreement about OK with making changes to ones local machine (PC etc.)... I do not recall the exact wording... Maybe I misunderstood what the last few lines of the "Google Chrome" T. O. Agreement stated... I choose the disagree button and quit the install. If someone wants to go check it out, sure the will.. Thanks for reading! Wishing you safe browsing!

I switched back to Firefox

A couple weeks ago I downloaded Chrome for my Ubuntu laptop and my Minimac. It seemed pretty good but then I noticed advertisements were being targeted to my area. This tells me Chrome was trackinh my IP location and then targeting my general area with area specific advertisements. That is too much privacy invasion for me so went back to Firefox and Safari. I still really like Gmail and use Google for my home page.

So Does Microsoft

The main thing he said was that as you type in the address bar it will send that information back to google. He shows it happening...Yet, what he didn't say was that it doesn't send it to google if google isn't the search provider. It will send that info to the search provider's servers.

He also didn't state that Microsoft's product does the same thing.

He tried to differentiate the search box from the address bar, yet when you look at IE you can search in either if you choose. I believe the address bar search provider can be set differently from the search box where you might search.

And, as well, anyone with half a brain knows that these toolbars are only good for one single purpose. That purpose is that they are there for tracking, even if you are not on their servers. I've never seen a toolbar that did anything other than track nor a set of buttons that couldn't be duplicated with short cuts/favorites.

Recollection

when I read up on what's new in IE8 I recall that one of the features was that it sends all that you type in the addressbar to MS.. for 'helpful analysis and assistance' of course
