But, in my case, I am very interested in distributed computing, which means my cpus tend to operate at 100% pretty much all the time. When you consider the maximum possible crunching potential of chips, rather than, say, how much it's going to cost to put your home movies on DVD and play the latest games, the result can be very different.

Not really sure if anyone cares about this little aspect of the market, but for the people saying,"Wtf am I going to do with a quad-core when my dual-core is barely stressed most of the time?" these companies are going where the money is, and even if it seems silly now, at some point these chips will be powerful to start a new technological paradigm. It might even be something no ones even thought of yet. I mean, I don't know of anyone who saw the Internet coming when it was only a few thousand nodes.
