Cores vs speeds

There's not too much point having high CPU speed if it spends most of its time waiting for the RAM.

Selling declocked, (cooler) multicore products into the desktop market may well give higher margins than trying to scavenge every bit of speed that doesn't gain much except more fan noise.

Given what people are asking PCs to do these days even quad cores get a good workout, spending a good chunk of time doing context switching - and if you declock down to 1.5-1.8Ghz how much heat do you need to get rid of?

Ferrari vs 18 wheeler. One is "faster" but the other gets far more done.

Loving the arguments here

Firstly I would point out that without AMD Intel would be even more stagnent than it is now and we would all still be using single core Pentium 4s! There is a reason that at work we use Xeons in Servers and AMD quads in desktops. Simoly put AMD has gone back to the good old days of competing on performance per £ (or $) rather than just setting a random price like INtel. In the server market therefore Intel are better for the kind of price-range servers we buy but not even close for desktops.
AMD will be back from holiday soon and will produce something better than Intel for a few years before taking another holidaym its just the way it works! AMD really aren't crap, sensible people that can, do research and just buy whats best for their budget at the time and don't get this brand loyal sickness.

@Maddoctor

Maddoctor, you should stop surfing the net and get back to work scrubbing toilets at Intel.

I wish AMD is losing money this year.

I don't want to see any AMD's craps in the market. Their products are the result of bad engineering from incompetent engineers. The world will be a better place without AMD, so the consumer will not see any AMD crappy products.

128 bit width Vs 256 bit Width....

Intel Becomeing SO Powerful. Love BIG Head. Pumpkins in fore rest. AMD Gives less, yet cost is Par. In Fast change world+Catalog, Always Next System.

Have 4770 128 bit Machine, still has vga, no direct hdmi, adp ok. Now adding to crossfire, 5750 512 Mb, only one with 128 bit width & same chipper as 4770. twke Me to Pilot. 1360 SP For two fifty. with such high 7 experience graphic 7.2 w/4770 shouldn't be needed, yet could liberate some Vantage pointsY2K. plus all new Hard numbers & latest qual. yet all other 1 gb 5750 are not same bit width, moved up to 256, all differnt chipper. pci-e2.1

BuYeT In Small Steps. Technically Nvidia has some very strong points, too. Intel & Be Heaven. Coming around Oscars. PS YES You Can BLU RAY. Do 3 $100 22" screens eyefinty3240P with hole in Wall Adapter & large screen at bench
