Arthur, I think he may have got it... but as a jornalist, you can't jump saying "China is Covering up its Act" without firm evidences, or Nick would be really in trouble.

Now for us, mere commenters, we can talk out and loud that the chinese gov may had used the universities nets for the attack, as it can also be a scheme from the US gov to put the internet inch by inch over a greater survillance, as it can also turn out to be the two things...

The truth is that we, mere civilians, will never know the truth, not even or grand children on the story books.

Why target human rights activists

The explanation that it was students doesn't pass my sniff test for the targets of the hacks were human rights activists and dissidents. Why would college students target this group or for that matter, how did they know what their email addy's were.

Because Chinese students care so much about silencing dissidents and getting rid of porn! It's the Chinese government, and everyone knows it.

Well, it's definitely some PR stunt.

Else we wouldn't even know of it. My guess is it's just routine preparation for the inevitable disclosure that NSA and Google are practically synonymous.
