g`day

Google should cut their own throats to please this censorship nutter from oz?
I`m guessing this muppet doesn`t realise that google is not THE internet but only a search engine that could easily be switched from.

A simple suggestion

If the jerks promoting censorship have websites that allow any sort of user content, visit them and engage in spirited discussion of the topics they propose to ban.

Let's see just how good their censorship programs are.

FFS Conroy you TOOL

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh FFS what is Conroys problem?

I for one like (most) "objectional content" - and I like to be able to exercise my own choice. I like to gain my own opinions based upon my own experiences., and I like to be able to make up my own mind.

Why - because I like to tune into a far broader range of content than to be spoon fed the bullshit that the "same as every other news services" feed me.,

And with the meddling christian nazies pedaling their "censor everything except what they say we should be allowed to access" on behalf of their fictitious deity that has it in for all of us anyway....

If Conroy had any balls he'd give them all a one way tourist trip to the south pole in swimsuits....to be with jesus - you understand.

Parental control

@allan, @mike : "F-Secure Internet Security 2010" has a "Parental Control" feature described here.
http://www.f-secure.com/kb/14951

Anyone else's does-it-all "Internet Security" product will probably have something similar soon. I see that Avast's offering is priced fifty British pounds. I think F-Secure is a good deal to cover 3 computers in a household long term, although I suspect that some alerts I've already been given are overcautious false positives.

Other separate tools are available which you may have to pay for: Google for (internet safe children) and you'll find articles on the topic with various standards of journalistic quality and bias. You'll also probably be reported to the Australian government, so, as a fav%ur, can you keep my name out of it?

You may have had the opportunity to see that a great many "adult" web sites have a front page that specifically recommends one or several such products, which is one way that you could research which one is most widely known... There also may be an "I am NOT over 18" button which will take the visitor straight to Disney's web site. This will probably charge more money than the adult web site does.

Propagation of the human race is indeed made easier by illustrations, but only a few are sufficient and far more than necessary are available, some retardation of our propagation is widely thought to be a good idea, and some of the people on web sites are doing it wrong anyway if propagation is what they meant to attempt. But I wouldn't want to have to follow only written instructions.

I think you'll find that censorship of sexual content will include George Orwell's novel _1984_. That's something to think about.

RIGHT. (Linkage)

I live in Australia.

We hate censorship.

We can't do much about it.

Worst bit, next to no-one knows.

We are screwed.

We do what we can though.

And we unleash many levels of rage.

Rabbit proof fence - apt analogy, but needs some tweeking

@Sebbs, I think the analogy to the Rabbitproof fence is apt, and with of bit of tweeking will fully represent the folly of Senator Conroy.

The internet filter is like a 2 foot high rabbit proof fence, with holes in it to allow the bilbys to get through, no gates at road crossings, and will be checked by one lonely outrider once a year.
Thus rabbits can decide if they want to stop at the fence or use any of the openings available to them.

And just like the real rabbit proof fence will be a complete fiasco.

Most Aussies Do Not Want This!

The majority of Aussies do not want this filter. Australia is already slow enough with online gaming and already has very expensive internet fees. This will just make it slower and more expensive. The best filter is good parenting. My child will be supervised. Besides, every 10 year old and their mates will know how to circumvent the filter anyway. The government is becoming socialistic and has gone against the majority of peoples wishes with climate, taxes, and rates. We cannot be wrapped in cotton wool to protect us especially when it is going to cost us more than the average Aussie to live.

The People's Republic of Australia...

The People's Republic of Australia (or certainly the people of Australia) have been telling Mr Conroy to go forth and multiply ever since he started talking about this 21st Century version of the Rabbitproof Fence. Between him and Michael Atkinson, many Australian face oppression by by the government

silence before the storm

I've lived in Australia for 4 years and I can sense a major storm brewing over this issue. Since Howard left, mainstream media, eg: tv, have become very sympathetic to the Federal government. All they ever seem to talk about is climate change and whatever "trashy" story they can find to divert attention from the real news.

The only reason I found out about the censorship was thanks to Google News, and that makes me very angry. I've been told that the "vibe" among the Aussie populace is reminiscent of Cold War USSR - tacit acceptance of whatever the Gov't throws at them. But there is a tipping point. Maybe Google should do more?

Wow

I can't believe how out-of-sanity Aussie-land is getting with the censorship laws. I hope many Aussies are hoping mad about it, and will vote those numbwads out of office.

Banning nude small breasted women should've been where the line was drawn in the sand. Totally outrageous policy!

Censorship in Australia.

G'day folks,

There's seriously something wrong in Australia, I don't know what it is?. its becoming sooo bureaucratic its not funny. both parties Liberal and Labour have an agenda to censor the web so we are stuck.
The very fact that the Main Stream Media is not covering this topic is proof of the power of television, if it's not on tv it doesn't exist or enter the consciousness of Australians.

@mike

As the father of a lovely daughter who is now 29, I can't recommend anything better on this topic for your loving gift to your darling girl than this song:

http://popup.lala.com/popup/360569470940828678 - "I want a love that will last" by Renee Olstead

She recorded that when she was about 14.

All the best,

So what do you recommend?

My daughter just got a netbook for her birthday. I tried the Windows fitler, it still let me go to playboy.com so that doesn't work. I don't see any porn blockers in Avast. Any suggestions?

@Robert Carnegie

allan nielsen isn't doing so because he's a twat that wants to complain, and demonstrate his high-and-mightiness by effusing about how offensive porn is.

Get the $#%^ over it, everyone. Porn is just people naked and/or having sex, which is utterly normal. And in fact, is rather required. You know...for the continued existence of our species.

Anyone like our buddy "allan" who gets up on a soap box to whine about how "offensive" and "immoral" porn is needs to, firstly, be punched squarely in the face, and then needs to shut the hell up and stop pretending there's anything immoral or offensive about people being naked and/or having sex.

There is nothing more offensive than someone offended by sex.

"im cold, someone throw a few more books on the fire".

surely the onus should be on parents to monitor their childrens net usage, or install filters. anyone above the age of 18 should be able to pursue and or indulge any interest they have online, "immoral" or otherwise, excluding that which is illegal - immoral and illegal are two seperate things, what one considers immoral is subject to the individual, and morality really shouldnt play a part in governing a country. What is illegal is illegal because it is abuse, because it is wicked, because it is brutal and because it involves a lack of consent. much like censorship.

The internet isnt understood by the Australian government.

laughed at "titstorm" haha.

@allan nielsen you can blocks porn from your computer

There are several cheap products that can block most "adult" content fromsyour Internet experience whilst allowing legitimate usage. Indeed, you probably can set the Internet security suite that you ought to be using to exclude identified pornography web sites. Apparently you haven't done, so why?

Dangerous road

Any time someone decides to censor what others want to watch or read is a dangerous road to go down.
Who is to decide the fine line of what is right or wrong. In truth we must decide for ourselves and our children what is fit to see or read. If we allow the government to do it for us we will be giving up freedoms.
It's not much different from me telling you what church for you to go to or even if you should go at all. I like the idea of movie ratings(in the U.S.) for children but I wouldn't even agree with all of those ratings and that's where the danger lies, who's to decide?

Life of Brian

and if you had not been able to see the movie The Life of Brian you would have ended up as a drug dealer and never have reached this high level of journalism...

All sites with nude, sexual etc images should be marked, with a dotxxx in the domain name so everybody could filter them out if they felt so. As it is today you have no chance of not ending up on porn sites by accident. Completely unacceptable!

Notice also that many porn sites spread viruses and/or are run by criminals.

Have a nice day.
