it is safe to upgrade to 3.1.2 and then unlock/jailbreak.

Use the blackra1n tool.

Avoid 3.1.3.

Hi folks. So I've put off upgrading to anything past 2.2.1 (5H11) on my first gen (2G) iPhone ( modem 04.05.04_G) --- do you think it is now 'safe' to go to at least 3.1.2 with the systems that are in place?

I wouldn't have had to jailbreak my iPhone if Apple had given me a way to use custom SMS tones. Something which has been functionality on the Sony Ericsson & Nokia phones for the last 3 years.

The selection of SMS tones are pathetic, and seriously irritating. And failing to include the functionality to use your own custom ones has basically led me to the jailbreak tools.

When will vendors learn, that if you don't give people basic, simple bits of functionality, they're going to seek people, tools, and avenues which they would prefer that they not find out about...
