I'll start off by stating that, yes, I am a fan of AMD.

I think most people have lost sight of that AMD generally ALWAYS had the slower processor. It was really only for a short period that they had the performance crown. This might very well continue for all eternity. It really should as Intel has been one step smaller size wise for as long as I can remember. The reason then that I am an AMD fan is that we've ALWAYS had better performance for your dollar with AMD. I know it is a sweeping statement to say always but it's probably not too far from the truth.

So don't write AMD off because they have a slower cpu. Pay more for an i7 and get more, but the more you spend the less you got for your dollar. That's fair I suppose. Same goes for the 5000 series gfx cards. I really like my 5770. I think it hit a very sweet bang for buck spot. the 5980 however? eeeek! My wallet is burning! It definitely isn't five times faster than the 5770!

So AMD hasn't got the bleeding edge in CPUs but they DO have the sensible edge. My $0.15

AMD Chipsets

AMD just doesn't just get it, they need to have there own in-house decent chipset to go with their CPU's.

Before you all go flaming me with ATI chipsets, let me remind you those are very old ones designed way before the merger/takeover, and don’t get me started with finding drivers and updates for their chipsets.

Chipsets is what sets it apart, Intel have known this for years and they making a killing on it, because their CPU's and Chipsets go well together, same reason Windoze and Office gets on like a house on fire.
Intel chipsets may not be the flashiest on the market and may not have the latest bells and whistles, but they are very stable and that's reason enough and you get easy drivers updates and support; same goes for Genuine Intel motherboards.

Windoze is unstable enough it doesn't needs help crashing it can do that by itself.

That is the single biggest reason huge multinationals and big and small corporations buy Intel CPU’s and Chipsets and of course Intel motherboards.

By the way I’m no fan of Intel integrated graphics at all, they are and will probably be utter crap for years to come or till the end of the world; that’s why I always buy and sell only PC’s/Notebooks with ATi Graphics.

As a side note I’ve used Nvidia Chipsets and Graphics years ago, but got burned more than once (more like hundreds of times) by stability problems, crashes and complete failures, so they are dead to me.

Overdue payment by Intel

Intel did get off easy. Don't understand Why to blame Intel's comment about customers would have purchased AMD if it had good products regardless of bribery. How do you figure? Do you even know what the lawsuit is about? If you did you wouldn't have made that comment. The quid pro quo had to do with a company like Dell not selling computers with AMD chips so customer's never got a chance to buy them in many markets like education and business. In Dell's case, no markets at all. They were relegated to consumer market by Intel through their "incentive contracts" with computer makers. When Opteron and Athlon were introduced, they were better than anything Intel had at the time and yet companies like Dell (biggest at the time) weren't offering them in their computers, why? Dell would regularly say they were evaluating AMD, but never commit. Not until a couple of years ago. Much too late, in many ways, for AMD. It was yet another bribe from Intel. Sadly, a bribe that AMD needs desperately at the moment. But don't count out AMD. Many pundits have before, but they are still around. They've been around since 1969. Almost as long as Intel.

Why to blame INTEL

I don't think it is fair enough to blame INTEL.....irrespective INTEL had bribed or not, if AMD hads a good product, Customers would have purchased that and demand would have gone more.....It would have made sense in 2006, but now in 2010 AMD doesnot have even a single product to compete with INTEL......If AMD had continued with the case, definitely INTEL would have lost...That is just pea nuts for a giant like INTEL and finally the commission will get the cash.....So what is the gain AMD would make out of that again running in to consecutive losses....atleast thsi time they could show a profit in their balance sheet because of INTEL...so they should be thankful

@ Wingnut 2

And BTW, Intel does file lawsuits. Against AMD for the record. Google "Intel AMD 386 lawsuit" It didn't help though. Intel lost.

@Wingnut

Your comparisons and analogies are childish and way off base. If someone stole $100 from you and you went to court and got $5 back, should we flame you and call you weak? Nah. Fanboy will suffice.

That being said, I do think the title of this article is a bit absurd, buy hey, this is the Inq, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

hmm

i think the title is ridiculous , infact an insult to justice other than that i think whatever the writer tried here it didnt work

Sigh as well

Capitalism must suck where it's not known to be fair and lawsuits swarm for noting being good enough.

If AMD didn't file a suit and didn't get a check, they'd profit under $50,000? How do you split that in the vested and civilian stockholders? $5 a piece?

Sounds like they took note of RAMBUS in not improving product, just call "CAR" on each bad pass of street football. No one that doesn't take Viagra pays over $500 for a CPU or GPU. Sad thing is that AMD has nothing in any level but GPU. They're even letting nVidia Ion in desk/netbooks and not even trying themselves.

The strong are on defense. The weak get lawyers filing suits instead of fixing their company. Intel didn't file suits when they were weak. They improved.

*sigh*

@Infinite Loop Cupertin: why do people insist on spewing gibberish like this, do you actually think people are entertained by this crap, the answer is NO.

@vik: Why are you concerned with a $1000 chip, performance per $1 both companies fare pretty similar, with AMD lagging behind a bit, which is fine by me because i prefer the ATI chipset and ATI graphics. Do you need a lrger penis/bragging rights.
The high end Intel chipset is absurd i would not pay $1000 for high end CPU, I'd rather spend $700 on a GPU and $300 on CPU.

Bulldozer or Bust

Bulldozer better be something really shiny, else there may be no recovery to be had. Feel like its AMD's last chance for a performance crown.

Processor wise anyway, the Radeon 5000 series is quite shiny, though stock of it is rather limited.

Intel got away dirt cheap

The writer seems to have zero gasp of history/reality! intel should thank AMD for the AMD_64 standard, the memory controller technolgy AND for the huge market share intel STOLE from AMD using mob practices. Convicted criminal Intel got away dirt cheap!
I hope the FTC in New York sues intel for ten times the amount they were ordered to pay for unfair business practices in the EU!

Thank Intel?

for giving us 50p to cover the £50 you illegally took from us and, more importantly, customers.

I just hope MS are prevented from stopping us getting ARM netbooks so they can both go and rot.

@wilf

I agree with you, except that I think AMD would have had more money, because if it was the other way around Intel wouldnt have accepted the settlement and would have proceeded till the end of the trial. There is no plus in the money AMD received as a punishment to Intel, I think Intel had it really cheap.

Sorry for my english

Wrong spin...

What nonsense!
Surely the reason Intel paid out was because of their use of unfair practices. In other words this money is money AMD would have had if it had been operating on a level playing field - plus a bit as a punishment to Intel. I see no reason for AMD to thank Intel for Intel belatedly being forced to right a wrong.
