I can charge mine while connected on a Wifi but the unit goes hot that i have to remove the back cover to let it 'breath'. I dont know how long do i need to charge the unit before I could actually tell that it is 'fully' charged.
I got one for IDR 899,000 (approx. US$100). The bottom line is its easy to use. Primary use is to allow my iPad WiFi to get to the internet. It is quite a cheap solution compared to buying iPad 3G, plus a chance to share the connection with friends or just other devices I have.
I had a problem in setting it up for the first time. I can easily connect when it is hooked to a laptop, but stand alone, the signal indicator remains red. If I connect it trough a laptop then unplug it after connected, it works. Finally I found that I need to deactivate PIN of the SIM card. When connected through a laptop, the interface to enter PIN pops up. Stand a lone there is no way to enter PIN.

Mugen Power has released 3900mAh battery for e5830, they claim 17 hours runtime with it. Look here: http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/huawei/huawei-e5830-pocket-wi-fi/mugen-power-extended-battery-for-huawei-e5830-pocket-wi-fi-with-battey-cover-in-white-3900mah.html
most htc phones can become wifi hotspots, and i'm sure other wm devices as well, through tweaks. also, my HTC can be charged and in the same time be used as a hotspot, unlike this thingy by huawei.
This is a brilliant piece of technology, fast and portable with large range. The review is poor on the aspect of range .. with the low results.. I have personally used this in a call centre office and i can easily go to the opposite end of this office without connection drop and i agree with Steve fry, it does not loose charge when plugged in :)
I leave my unit permanently connected to the mains, often for days at a time, and it never powers down. So while it might not 'recharge' during use, if you leave it connected, it doesn't 'discharge' either. One of the best things I have bought for ages.
You can do the same with a nokia (possibly s60?) phone and the Joikuspot software. There's even a free version, although that only provides http services and no encryption!
What fallback options do 3 offer in the event of no 3G signal? From the way the LEDs are described, possibly none. That's one of the things I like with my Vodafone PAYG stick, that even if there's no 3G reception the chances are there's 2G. Slow, but potentially life-saving.
Good concept though, one that will surely catch on.
3 currently sweetens the deal by throwing in an iPod Touch, whenever you take out a contract with the MiFi device as apposed to buying the product on pay as you go.
Where you could really use the Touch as an iPhone in conjunction with 3's MiFi, by using the Skype application with an online number :)

The Htc Hd2 can become a WiFi router while using your 3g data connection. its a very handy little tool.

Technically you can do this with some phones. But on most UK contracts, phones only let the phone itself use the internet.
I suppose you can use a wireless Skype phone with it? (If like Three your provider allows Skype)
