Actually the Apple patents in question are old, from an old and then sacked computer project (to be launched in early 1990´s) against a short lived coputer system that was called "NEXT". Since that was in early 1990´s those patents will expire latest in 2 years from now. Not all those Apple patents will hold (patents can be invalidated for multiple reasons - if someone has a patent it is not solid proof of ownership, it is more like a claim that will be tested in court if need be).
Nokias patents are OTOH different. You can not do with reasonable cost an integrated wlan antenna or many other thing to computers or mobile phones without licensing from Nokia. The research has been done there (Nokia uses 15% of its total costs to research, it is a strong research company and has been now well over 20 years for mobile phones and such). The one using that technology for free is Apple.
What I read above is based on an (Finnsih language) analysis of those patents in question from both sides, the timing and what patents will likely hold. So do not get surpriced if Apple loses big time and pays some and the some more.

The clip is said to been banned from youtube first, at least there is one (same clip with quieter voice) that states so.
The Nokia patents are strong, the Apple patents are trash. Those that write here "what happens if Nokia looses both cases" do not understand anything about patents nor do have information what exactly those patents are. Apple can not get round those. They use Nokia technology.
I like Apple products but not the way that corporation behaves itself.
try to read more on this topic somewhere else, this one is incomplete. it isn't as simple as it's stated here, much more is involved and nobody is a clear winner here. nokia is demanding higher royalties from apple than from the others and is also demanding access to apple's private patents. apple on the other hand should have paid the royalties but as is written somewhere else these two have been negotiating since 2007. there's much more to it. inq should not write about these things as they're not good researchers.
I think Nokia has a better shot winning this than Apple. Licensed chips aren't the issue here, Nokia and Apple both make phones based on ARM - the alleged IP infringement is in the software. Depending on the patents in question, Nokia likely has had them years before Apple. Nokia has smarthpones dating pre-2000 while Apple launched their first phone in 2007 - are there really doubts that Apple has patents predating Nokia's?
@Zio
It's not... there I said it. The iPhone is killing the phone market, and the best the phone market can do is produce "Concept Products" and copy Apple's App Store.
Oh and BTW, Zio isn't just a normal commentator, it's a deluded fruit punching, constipated bottle of sponge alcohol.
P.S. Do not attempt to say it is not,it will only demonstrate your brain has been sucked away from your skull and that your will is totally bent to zio's double-dipping-dripping fanta can.
One day Apple will wake up and decide to sue fruit-bearing trees (and the farmers who own them) because they infringe on their trademark. A few days after that, we'll wake up and find we will all have to worship the image of St. SJ of Cupertino on our two-way videos. And those who will not will be taken downtown to the MinLuv!
BTW, not only Apple is a fruit-themed toymaker... it's a fruit-themed brain-sucking will-bending toymaker.
P.S. Do not attempt to say it is not, it will only demonstrate your brain has been sucked away from your skull and that your will is totally bent to apple's double-think
When you had your super-duper mobile internet devices 3-5 years ago EVERYONE told you just modify them very little AND add the cellphone functions and they will be iPhone or all other smartphone killers.
What you have done?
You've just continued creating $20 cr@p phones or ugly brick smartphones not very much better then first gen HTC bricks.
Now everyone who started later is better then you.
Just ONCE I'd like to see Nick the Ferret go ONE DAY without writing an article about Apple Just ONE DAY.
Every friggin' day it's the same thing. The Ferret gets a hold of an Apple story, bastardizes is to the point that is pure fiction, and tries to pass it off as fact.
I wish the Inq. would wise up already and FIRE this two-bit hack!
In other news Apple sue Nokia for every patent under the sun to do with the GUI, user interaction, file system, multi touch and every other patent under the sun Apple has.
Apple on the other hand bought licensed chips. Why Nokia believes that anyone would pay them a licence twice is beyond any reasonable logic.
The article is incomplete. Can you be more specific on the implication's of what would happen if both the cases go against Nokia. Which all products of theirs would be affected. What are the patents involved? How is apple planning to counter the accusation, or is apple accepting that they are using Nokia's patents? Apple is notrocious about pegging on others patents and cries a lot foul when their patents are used.

While it is true that Apple hate is normal and healthy, it's still a fact that Apple is a toy maker :P
so Randall - i take it this is your first time on the inquirer?
Apple hate is normal and healthy :P
How did Apple go from a herald of change in computing and mobile phones to a "toy maker"?
