"Shame about 3D, I cant believe so many folks have finally been sucked in by this gimmick."
I know!! I for one will not be tricked into using this gimmick. I also wasn't fooled by those OTHER gimmicks, color and sound. I like my movies to be presented properly: in grainy black and white with someone playing a piano in the corner. Those other things are just gimmicks!
Okay, sarcasm mode *OFF*. For those folks who have a deeper awareness of history other than there self-centered little world as far as it extends over the past few years, every single technological innovation is viewed as a "gimmick" by t6he less-imaginative, the ones who feel that the world sprang into place when THEY first become aware of it and should thus remain unchanged.
For those people I suggest a bit of history so they can see what a sad group they've chosen to align themselves with.
When stereo was first introduced, the audiophiles of the era were in an uproar. TWO channels!? That's an absurd gimmick! Proper audio playback required one channel and one speaker only! Ironically, the same folks who pioneered stereo were the first to cry "gimmick" when quad (and later surround sound) was introduced. Four channels!? Five? SIX?? You only need two! Everything else is conspicuous consumption!
No, everything else is PROGRESS. 3D is reaching a saturation point that will put it conveniently within reach of the masses. In ten years, even Jason will have 3D somewhere in his house (or suffer being laughed at by his kids and friends).
3d is a delicious sandwich that is here to stay on your lawn
haters gotta hate, but 3d dominates 2d in a lot of applications.
once consumer 3d is cheap and properly done, like in james cameron's avatar or the disney digital 3d version of nightmare before christmas, 2d's days are largely over.
Jason, I'll do you one better: when my kids were 3 or 4 they loved playing with empty boxes.
It takes years of brainwashing/advertizing for people to willingly work like slaves so they can get a $2000 tv, and then pay for shows that they used to get over the air. Ha ha people are actually paying for radio now!
$2000 TVs and $100/month for cable/satellite, and couch potatoes complain about the $ of their cholesterol medication!
Whew! With the dust from the format-war pretty much settled, I was getting mighty tempted to finally get a Biddy player. But now that they're about to introduce some upgraded features, I'll wait another 2-5 years for the dust to settle on 3d standardisation of Biddy players, Thriddy TV's and of course - reliable ripping software.
Excellent! Saved meself some cashes!

HDMI 1.4 is required for 3D over HDMI. If the PS3 is compatible, a new HDMI chip is not needed? Will the PS3 then support ethernet over HDMI as well?

To Jason:
'soon folks will be happy to just buy a pretty box with nothing in it. '

Shame about 3D, I cant believe so many folks have finally been sucked in by this gimmick. I guess we are less sophistcated than we were years ago.
