Conveniently, the always Apple-hating writer fails to mention that the iPhone has long been imported into China, with estimates ranging between 500,000 to 3 million grey-market units in the country and are still selling like crazy!

The reason the "official" unit isn't selling is because the grey-market device IS ACTUALLY CHEAPER, has WiFi, and can be used with other carriers!

Why do people worship? You know, the pro vs con stuff. You buy, say, a banana and should it satisfies, you wouldn't set up an altar by the banana tree and start defending it against "all infidels", would you [you would !! …] and should the banana not satisfy, you'll just give it a miss and try for a better one next time [or get the Chinese one that does 4 things all at once]. That's what life teaches - don't hedge bets especially on one basket. Not when you are a basket case, of course. Witness, therefore, Hitler, footie gungho's, poppers and podders whilst not forgetting to mention that bigge vun, political parties and their rallies, especially the Yankee do-da ones.

they've had meizu m8 knock offs that sell for 150 dollars or less so go figure. their market is saturated with superior products. It's my guess the iphones that were bought were probably bought by foreigners visiting the country.

I'm not sure about where you work but in my company if we miss a sales forecast by 80% and waste a few million dollars... someone gets fired.

I've lived in Beijing for the past 4 years and anyone who wanted an iPhone, already had one before China Unicom's launch. Grey market HK and cracked US phones have been available in the markets since day one. And, due to the relatively high investment required, the market is much smaller than for a similarly equipped Nokia.

I have never seen a iphone and probably never will.I only want my cell phone to do one thing well, make phone calls. My 4 year old net10 Motorola works on different networks and I can make calls where most people cant even see a signal on there's.I dont want apps or watch movies on a little screen or any of the 100,000 other apps, I'm not even curious.
The other problem is ATT and they cost a small fortune every moth to use. I average about about $15.00 a month. a 300 minute card cost $30.00. NO THANKS APPLE

Oh dear, an non-Asian phone failed to sell in an Asian country. It's the most shocking news in the history of the world!

Anyone who knows anything about the far eastern mobile phone market might be less shocked. You could substitute Apple for Nokia, or Android, or Palm, and the story would still be completely true.
