i think intel still has most of their FABs in the US tho they are starting the build out in china and have one in israel (again i think but not sure). They have test facilities in other positions.

but ure right - this is not about american jobs or any such crap. it will not increase or decrease the joblessness since none of the wifi components get manufactured there.

RE: INtel is selling us out...again...

Intel does produce physical goods in the US. All of its Flash memory is fabricated in the US. It's used in the award-winning X-25M series of SSDs.

Ughhh WTF are you talking about?
I hate to break this to you but again with the "Branding" that my Amilo Pi2550 was "Built" in Germany. Is a load of Bull Excrement. I would have hoped by now that the People who come to these "Sites" would've realized that these "Devices" hail form South Korea or Taiwan.

In the case of Intel they probably still have a R&D and Design studio(s), in the USA, but I'd bet my Left Maple-Nut, that it produces absolutely NO PSYCHICAL GOODS from there.

For Zarks sakes lrn2TSMC!!

Intel doesn't care if you're confused, Intel just cares if you buy Intel stuff.

Here's the gist: Intel bundeled some products in a way that put a bit of extra cash in our pockets - your neighbor's jobs, you fools.

Now it isn't profitable, so Intel will let the lowest bidders and niche markets step in. We will get what we pay for - a sharp devide between the cheap crap and the uber expensive that actually works. The good stuff will still be bundled with expensive laptops with a couple of popular exceptions.

Oh, and FYI, no one really complains about quality and reliability of the Centrino hardware. Drivers are sometimes an issue, especially on Linux. Do you think the 'lowest bidder' model will result in better drivers? The best response you can think of is probably that 'it can't be worse'.

Will you spend $200 extra for a laptop because the only ones that come with good wireless are more expensive, because they are bundled with the 'high end' lappies? If you need to spend more money to get a laptop with a decent Linux driver, then that defeats the purpose of avoiding proprietary crap.

Not good enough reasons to take away western jobs and shove us a bit further down into the economic depression.

I'm not so sure

When centrino was first around it stood for something. Someone came to me and said "I'm looking to get a laptop" and I'd say "get one with Intel Centrino". I like AMD but I knew the person would get good performance, decent battery life and wifi.

Since then they diluted the brand and I have no idea what Centrino 2 is etc. I

What I think they should do is hang off, maybe come with a new brand and step up to the plate for wireless N, dual core laptops.

Push that branding so once again it stands for something meaningful.

Sensible decision

This will help clear some confusion. There are many people who think Centrino is a processor.

DUH

I think this is a great Idea!
First off (and, lets take my Laptop for example, a Fujitsu-Siemens Pi2550 for example), I'm not aware that Intel have a line of CPUs under the "Centrino" brand name. I was under the impression that there CPUs had names like "Celeron", "Pentium", "Core" or "Core2Duo". The last two to have been dropped (iirc because of some trademark dispute),. ~Sadly I can't seem to locate that particular "Article"~. Although I'm sure the Inq. had also reported on that Story as well.

In any case if I was some luser I'd might be forgiven the thought that this "Centrino" was in fact my Processor, because that's what is, basically what is stated (or implied), on my Casebadge.
Which has been of some mild confusion for me as to why this wasn't a "Centrino2" or "Centrino Duo", as the CPU a Core2Duo Mobile T5550, is in fact a Dual Core Processor.
