Although unlikely that it will ever happen, I would like to see a basic Os for every computer made as an alternative is we dont want to buy windows. All it would have to is boot the computer and run diagnostics and only support for it.
Something like Moblin could fit the bill buy I doubt it will ever happen.
Most people want windows but if I dont want why should I have to pay for it.
A light weight Os for make everything is working would do the trick. I can only dream I guess.
I was able to but a Dell mini 9 for $199. and free shipping 2 weeks ago.
I want it for future use and if ssd prices come down. I f I had to pay for micrsoft instead on Ubuntu that came with it I woulnt have bought it. When I put Ubuntu 9.04 the 4gb ssd I still had room for a lot of nice apps.
Moblin is probably most useful to Intel as a token or tool in it's relationship with Microsoft. Intel threatened Microsoft for many years that it would develop an OS to compete with Windows. Now it has (sort of). But Moblin is open source, Intel can't really make money off it per se.
Moblin is mainly a pawn, or a potential stick with which to beat MS, in the fight over the revenue split from netbooks.
..pushing Moblin as the standard, lightweight BIOS-resident OS, for instant-on functionality.
