Google is after the Education Mkt.

At a major university that foolishly decides to go with Google because of all the hype the Schools (primary through Hi-Ed) then there can be real problems for such a smal outage.

Think of showing up at a HiEd class without your work because of the outage.
Do you think the Profs are going to care that Google was down, I don't think so.

Mischief Manufacturer

I am one of those small enterprises (the allegedly small subset) that lost gmail for a while yesterday. Nothing critical and far better than Network Solutions's record.

However, according to Murphy's Law things go wrong when you can least afford it and do the max. damage. That was me yesterday. Unable to talk to clients.

Let's hope this is not a trend

Re: When?

The article said that the outage was on Thursday, aka yesterday, the 24th September.

When?

OK, it's 14:59 BST (13:59 GMT) as I type this on 25th September so was this outage yesterday or yet to happen today (article says outage started 15:30 GMT).

Are we forward planning these outages now?

Systems Support Analyst

If you use google, you know it kicks everyone elses' ass. If you don't you complain like an ignorant fool. Enough said.

Googlista

Look, I just made that stuff up (ID) but i really do love google services, how can you complain (as other have noted here) about something that works this well and is absolutely free?

Think of the alternatives? MS Windows and Office, big giant hairball like code sets that have become ubiquitous because their weren't viable alternatives. Along comes google and provides it all for free and the unwashed masses complain...ah, no good deed goes unpunished they say...

for me, i'm happily googling and watching my goog stock climb higher and higher...wake up please.

enterprise use?

"Is not yet ready for enterprise use". Google is for the consumer. Enterprises users should have their own e-mail system, even if they are still welcome to use @gmail. Google is serving millions or more users. Every business suffers from different problems with their servers. This is nothing compare to other problems I have seen with other email servers.

Google is Great

I kind of get tired of reading the complaints about Google. People are not perfect, computer systems are not perfect and things break. Google must have thousands of servers to manage and I am amazed at how well they keep things running. Not only that, they provide many great services for free. I just want to say Thank you Google! You are one of the best things that has happened to the Internet and my business!

small users - not subset

My email had problems too. Last week there was no service at all. Maybe users are too small and no one cares.
Small users instead of small subset.

No Susan, Not Greedy

Google offers so many of it services FOR FREE. How is that greedy? Maybe you are thinking of Microsoft. You really don't know what you are talking about.

Google's revenue comes from ads, which you don't have to click on. Stop complaining about a free service.

Greedy

Like so many companies, Google has become extremely greedy.

More and more billions.
Money is far more important than high quality... or in this case... "not even working at all".

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
