I stopped reading when I saw "Nick"

Another daily Apple bashing by the often moronic, never substantial reporting of Nick 'I loathe Apple' Farrel.

OXPLODE

Will it mimic the exploding feature too? Maybe in a less stylish way...

Hell, the insides of these things are all made in china anyway.

China is a unique market

Problem is the OPhone won't be a hit outside of China. Maybe it will for even poorer countries like India or Vietnam, but not for the US or Europe. The nature of any Chinese designed phone is:

a) It won't be user friendly. People in China are used to dealing with crappy phones and they have no motivation to get better phones. As such the OPhone will have little motivation to make it better when it has already served it's largest market. China markets are already filled with iPhone knock-offs whose functionality and usability is worse than a Nokia phone, yet they are selling like crazy. Local people just don't know/care about the difference.

b) No outside government will trust a phone that will no doubt be supported by the Chinese government. Think of all the censorship and surveillance the phone could potentially have. Something like "Green Dam" (or whatever it was called.)

c) Chinese companies that are accustomed to developing products targeted at the Chinese market are not accustomed to customer service or customer feedback. In other words, if you find a bug or security hole, it won't be publicly admitted and it won't be fixed.

d) China has few laws and even less executive powers protecting customers against harm in terms of radiation emissions, pollution and toxic chemicals. As such the product will not pass foreign inspection standards and therefore will not sell outside of China. The day that it passes, it will be too expensive to be sold for the local market, which of course will never happen.

e) It will be filled with crap. Every phone sold in China is filled with advertising software. I don't mean banner ads, I mean crap software analogous to AOL disks. Local companies pay to have it included in phones and no Chinese company can resist making a few more pennies with each phone sold.

One positive note is that it will probably drop it's price dramatically or offer a striped down version, after the initial high price doesn't attract any users. It may also go open source in hopes of attracting more users, which may start to attract the Linux hobbyist crowds, which then causes it to target the UMP (ultra mobile PCs) market.

Had to happen, sooner or later...

With iPhones being made aplenty in China, surely Apple did not think its manufacturing secrets would not eventually be used against it?

What will happen now, will trouble Apple: The OPhone market will open up a standard OS, browser and marketplace on common hardware - none of which Apple has any hope of controlling. What happened to Apple with the Mac when Microsoft unified the PC manufacturers under the Windows banner, is about to happen to them again with the OPhone OS.

Trying a patent dispute with the Chinese won't impress them, either - China knows it is becoming an ever-bigger market, and it will protect its native companies against foreign firms. America won't press China, either - they're too terrified that their supply of ever-cheaper televisions will suddenly be cut off.

So long, Apple - it was nice knowing you. At least the iPhone zealots will have one thing to be grateful for: Cheaper replacement handsets, when they drop theirs. (Ever seen an iPhone after it's been dropped once? Not a pretty sight!) For the rest of us, it's just another new item...

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
