@Not Better OCing

Wow. What have you been smoking ? Seems you have your eyes shut, fingers in your ears, repeating "LA LA LA LA LA LA..." You must be in a different universe.

Anandtech Review

You got the wrong URL for the Anandtech article, it's http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3634 for the review (the link posted is a Preview from May)

New naming scheme only last's 2-4years

What happens when Intel do a process shrink and need another 4 speed bins above the 870, 975 models ?

PR bunnies make up new naming scheme that last's 2-4years.

What happens when the next tick-tock design comes out to replace Nehalem et. al. ?

You guessed it, new naming scheme.

Can Intel please get someone not in the PR department to make up the naming systems that can last 6yrs. The actual designers may be worse as they create model numbers which are 16 characters long :)

Not Better OCing.

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=556849 AMD Quad core. WR! Validated.

Intel WR Quad core.
http://www.coolaler.com.tw/coolalercbb/core_i7_975/EVGA/6092.JPG WR! Not Validated. i7

http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=692873 WR! For i5.

So intel is still behind. These cpus are not better at OCing, besides real men use real cores like AMD does. AMD FTW!

WR, hasn't been broken yet for quad cores from AMD, cheaper, better, smarter, real benchmark performance. Not blinded by fake cores from a copy chip. The only advantage of having dual threads per core is fake performance. In the real world AMD wins cus they use real cores real cpu's.

Intel had to copy off amd to get this far and they still have to cheat with massive caches and hyperthreading threading. But no they can't make anything original, they had to copy memory controllers, hyper transport, direct connect arks, and so forth to even compare to AMD. Plus their cores are optimized for benchmarks. Nice how you don't get realistic results from them.

When it comes down to it, AMD is for real men, and these intel cpus are just toys for little boys.

I can't understand why anybody would pay $1000 for a unlocked multiplier when from AMD you can get it for $240, or $150, or $100 or even $50 to get a unlocked multiplier for the same thing. And unnoticeable performance differences in the real world.

But this will prob never see the light of day since this site is payed by intel to mask the truth. But its worth a try. LOL

AMD price cuts

AMD must plan BIG price cuts for their quads. even with the AMD platform slightly cheaper, most would have to be nuts to go with them after this for a quad core in the face of the i5 750, and P55 SLI/crossfire dual compatability.

Dual edge of multi threading

and interesting to note that game performance in windows seems to suffer from the multi threading feature on i7.

Performance on Linux seems to have room for improvement according to the review on www.phoronix.com

intel CPU names

I give up.
The intel CPU names could not possibly make any less sense. The i5 750, i7 860 and i7 870 are all faster than the i7 920?!? WTF? Do they just randomly draw the names out of a hat at intel these days?
Could someone please take intel's marketing dept out back and put them down. The CPU model names no longer convey any meaningful information about the damn CPUs with having a spreadsheet handy for reference I guess...

too much $$$

Personally, I'm not going to spend much more than $100 for a CPU. People with a bottomless pit of money will always go with Intel anyway, even when they aren't the top of the performance heap.

Intel prices never cheap.

Yeah! I really like how Intel works. Main stream and discount i5 & i3 require new motherboards. Are they mad. Any system requiring a new Intel mobo will never be main stream or discount. From the price of the Intel mobo alone you are already in high end territory.

Its all about the platform

Hi!

If you take a look at the numbers, these new processors perform just slightly better than AMD's current offering which is all good for reviews but irrelevant for everyday use especially when you see that Games benefit more from a more powerful GPU than a CPU (see Gaming benchmarks at highest settings) ... and the once demanding 'video transcoding' is also accelerated by the GPU so CPU numbers don't count as much.

Try running some games with intel's (integrated) graphics and any CPU comes down to its knees.

Multimedia apps and social networking are important things for most people these days, requiring a good GPU and a better than average broadband connection.

Personally, I believe that a system with AMD chipset + AMD/ATI Graphics delivers much more in terms of performance and value!

Platform price

Not to point out the obvious, but AMD motherboards are much cheaper than Intel and the x4 ii 940 is cheaper than the core i5 750. DDR2 is cheaper than DDR3 or you probably already have some. Point being AMD is still cheaper, not a better value. Though intel chips procs, NB and SB run hot on me usually which is not fun.
