Not a lot, and I think the same will be the case for the OS; unfortunately, as I like Linux.

Google seems to have pulled off some pretty significant PR coup in the last week.

They announce that they will release a Linux variant next year, with all that means in terms of software availability, and all of a sudden everyone is talking about it being a 'windoze-killa'.

Where are all the folks going on about how they will wait until at least the first service pack, or even version 2, before they go anywhere near it.

Just seems kinda like everyone has had a visit from their local GoogleBrainwasher (coming to a screen near you soon), or at least has slipped a couple of branches down the gullible-tree ;/

Wintel is what it is because of two things, all the apps require x86 windows and everybody wants to run all the apps.

Linux takes x86 out as a requirement. That's why linux runs on little routers, mobile phones, big workstations, desktops, whatever. It runs just fine on arm and mips and powerpc as well. That's BAD for intel. If intel keeps their hand in things they can encourage these companies to stay with their atom and x86 offerings instead of joining qualicomm and the like with their arm solutions.

Microsoft has made windows for other platforms in the past and the xbox 360 is powerpc, windows mobile is generally arm, etc, so they could switch or support more if they wanted to. And so long as visual studio could build x86,arm,powerpc, etc targets all at the same time, it wouldn't even be that bad for software developers.

Netbooks are supposed to be cheap. Tacking on $50 or even more for an OS is a huge percentage of the cost, higher than or close too the cost of the Atom and Chipset. Now I suupose with the high cost of Windows nowadays the same holds true for mid range PCs too. Maybe MS needs to come up with another business model for the netbook sector and offer a free, or extremely low cost OS.

How about GoogleIn. Intel's got Google inside :)

Windows, Linux, Leopard, even SunOS, and now GoogleOs, Wintel aliance is not broken as MS still need Intel badly. Intel is just going along with any OS that it can; is no surprise; Intel is the OS whore.

Intel doesn't care which OS wins. They just want to make sure that whichever OS the consumer wants there is an Intel processor under the hood. Given the big presence that Google has it's little surprise that Intel would pay attention when they first started talking about making their own version of OS (really their own interface to Linux.)

So I don't see this as a breakup of the Wintel alliance. It's more of a dalliance with another partner which may develop into a full blown romance should Chrome really take off. Given that it's just Linux that seems unlikely (since Linux has never been big with consumers) but maybe Google can make it palatable to the consumer with their ability to bring email/word processing/spreadsheets to their products which is something that every consumer is going to want access to. That and the Google name should help, but whether it will be enough to make significant inroads against Windows won't be known until the product is ready to ship.
