I plan on buying two Intel i7 CPUs for a home server project. Compared to the i7, anything by AMD seemed like second choice - so that was the second reason I opted for Intel, and went ahead with the purchase of two X58 system boards.
The first was OS support. Intel has an awful lot of vendors with its products on a HCL. AMD has ... well, fewer. And if I'm going to splash out the readies for a new box, I'd rather be supported by the big boys, than the fanboys.
The Inq never stops with the AMD love. I have come to the conclusion that it isn't just despising nvidia that makes Charlie foam at the mouth, it is despising anyone who dares compete with the beloved AMD.
This place is turning into Beyond3d when Dave (who is a PR rep for AMD) ran it. Viral market much AMD?
how dare the inventor of x86 be the best at making them. maybe AMD should make a new architecture which is "better" and then get everyone to make software for it.
You just made my point - you mentioned...."I think arguing over this stuff is silly" but then you go on and sling away, I can feel the hate. I love being right ;) - Let it go, it will be alright
"AMD offered 1 million free chips to one manufacturer"
Hmmm ... isn't that "dumping" ? Ok for AMD but not for Intel ? Would the Intel rebates really be worth more than 1 million CPUs at $0 ? Must have been embarrassing that they would prefer paying net $$ for Intel CPUs in lieu of free AMD ones.
I am not a fanboy, but I do side with AMD. I think arguing over this stuff is silly, but I am willing to make myself a hypocrite for just a moment. Intel IGP SUCKS, AMD's is far better. that right there is reason enough not to buy one, I have problems running flash videos on this thing on medium quality. I got to watch a movie and it jumps from frame to frame. My MX400 ran better than this, but this computer has 2 gigs of ram and a duel core. Put in an 8800GT and it ran great.
Intel doesn't need to bribe people to buy their product, they are trying to shut AMD out of the market so they can have a monopoly. Intel doesn't want AMD to have an X86 license. do you know what that means for a company that makes CPU's? IT MEANS THEY CAN'T MAKE CPU's!!! I hate this "Intels better/AMD's better BS" because if it wasn't for competition, neither company would have a reason to innovate. If AMD went under you would all be stuck with a core 2 duo. The reason Intel wants AMD gone is that AMD IS A SERIOUS THREAT IN THE CPU MARKET.
I say, go with what is best for you, currently that is AMD for me. My phenom 2 X3 is great, I didn't have to change my asus M2N32-SLIdeluxe to upgrade either. That was a $200 top of the line motherboard. Intel's go for $250+. 4-5FPS in a game never made a huge difference. If you want something that is fast, get a duel core, buy lots of ram, and spend the rest on a better video card if your a gamer. Both systems run on par with each other(other than some I7 benches that exceed 30% improvement). But if it wasn't for that 30% AMD wouldn't have a reason to try harder.
TO INTEL PEOPLE: thank AMD for the i7
TO AMD PEOPLE: thank intel for the Phenom II
Intel had tilted the tables so far in its favor that AMD couldn't even give their product away.
I was exposed to this anti-competitive behavior when Dell was offering us product below market value to keep AMD out. Dell was still doing OK because of the incentives being paid to them by Intel. Now that those incentives have dried up, how well is Dell doing in the competitive PC market?
AMD fanbois just whining?
"It said AMD offered 1 million free chips to one manufacturer — which could not accept because that would lose it a rebate on many millions of other chips. It only took 160,000 free chips in the end, regulators said."

WhY can`t a AMD fan, ever engage into a normal meaningful conversation, all they do is mudsling... cry foul at every turn. AMD, just needs to update their product lines and execute their launches better and stop all this whining about Intel. Both companies have great products. AMD at this time, just don’t have a product that can compete with Intel, Build something that does .. Till then be silent!!!
The big bad Intel doesn't play fair, they really don't have better products than AMD and they really can't simply just build them cheaper. They have to bribe everyone to buy their products.
Funny you should mention going for AM3, it's exactly what I have done for a customer.
A customer of mine wanted some new PCs and the choice was Intel or AMD. Looking at the fact that i7 and i5 require new motherboards I offered them some Phenom II X3 systems and they were really happy with them.
The great thing is, as they have AM3 chips they can keep them and use them to upgrade from the AM2/DDR2 systems they have now when the prices come down a bit and then maybe even swap out the Phenoms for maybe a 6 core chip if and when they're released.
But you could also argue that some customers rather than upgrading will just buy a system to last say 3 to 5 years and then swap it out with a new box, but yeah I guess it could be good for AMD.
Of course intel will not let AMD to gains in the marketshare moore than 3%
Intel as an arrogant evil company will force their platform and make the customers to adopt their chipset in their intel onboard product. As always they will convoke their any fallacious act to prevent their competitor product and make their competitor product to lose sight of consumer eye.

Nothing personal.

Rob
dont forget they are prepared to break the law (bribing) to get their products into retail outlets.
just as a lie leads to further and bigger lies, crime and corruption is the same.
vote with your feet and insist on AMD and you will get a more responsive cpu and it wont have cost you the earth
