Leading myfoot..

GloFo is just a beggar. IBM is not, and will never be, interested in EUV. Their engrs, and mangers alike, not only boo but also hate EUV. Go ask Timmy Kit. If you ever heard IBM proclaiming their vested interest in EUV, you tell them, "Show me." Just go to ALB nano and ask vendors, no IBM engr works fulltim EUV, I think they are temp contracotrs. Too bad Glofo, you are leading..myfoot

"Leading"?

Yeah, I agree ssj. I also love the way the AMD guy spins the fact that AMD is "leading" in immersion litho. Right! AMD is "leading" because they HAD to buy the immersion tool to get to 45nm. Intel was able to do 45nm without the immersion tool, thus postponing the purchase of those extremely expensive scanners until the 32nm node. Still, good to see things heating up again. Makes life less boring.

Your articles

... always include comments only from an AMD spokesperson. That makes them a bit one-sided. Just saying.

Your Article was just Fab

Sylvie, great article.

I'd love to get a personal tutorial in immersion lithography if or when you have time. I am only a 300mm man so I hope that doesn't disqualify me...=)

Seriously, never has fab technology sounded this sexy...keep up the good work and more importantly keep giving us a reason to read the INQ.

Actually, Hector, pills might HELP Vondrashek

Pills are what prevented me from thinking Katie Couric was talking to me through the tv many years ago. But I'm feeling MUCH BETTER now. Improved quality of life through chemistry. ;)

Seriously, though, I'm not really sure what's going on with VonDrashek, could he be telling jokes that simply translate badly?

silicon technology?

somehow "bulk silicon technology" sounds very sexy in that article, knowing it came from you, Sylvie. Nice one, keep up the good work.

It's about lower cost

vondrashek should stay off the pills.

Back to the article, it's not about Moore's Law at all. It's simply about lower cost.

Some of the costs in manufacturing are pretty much fixed per wafer. Since you get more CPUs on a 450mm wafer than on a 300mm one, those costs are less per CPU and Intel margins are higher.

Once more around the maypole

Hmmm yes, I seem to remember reading recently about IBM achieving breakthroughs at the 2nm level in the lab.

Luckily, AMD doesn't have to spend resources developing process technologies anymore, that's GloFo's job now, backed by astute investors. With IBM involved, GloFo should be readily able to keep pace with and even exceed Intel on process technologies.

450mm wafers are a distraction right now, plenty of improvements left in 300s. Me thinks me smells a red herring.

More interested in carbon-based technologies, though, that's where the future lies. Finally, carbon-based entities with intelligence, what a concept!

Um...what?

I have no comment on the article. However, I just have to comment on vondrashek's post. Normally, they are a little of the wall. But this last one is something special. "Little Big Thangies..."? LOL...I have come to the conclusion that you are either an alien or you're caught in Searle's Chinese Room.

Future: A,B,C,& D Time....i9.

Ultee', Future Prophettlizer, Has Seen Time Machine & Its' GULFTOWN. Q1'10 32nm Westmere , triple Channeled, heres last week/month/year announcements, just to Remind:
i9 Archetecture. First One.. its only X58 Chipset.
Next: from i people. New Advancements in NON Immersion Technology has taken place from ~193 nm method , Decades Ago & done something unusual, 2 nm. Ya, TWO. Not tu-tu, Just plain Ole 2nm.

How'd You Like That For Small. Intel states immersion will be between today & UpGraded Standard Litho of 2 nm. It could take some real time, if it works at all.

Gulftown is 6 cores, 12 threads. Everything You NEED+Like & right after Bloomfield (old Nehelam) 45nm in 4thQ of '9.(Bloomies out as Core right now).

There are 2 32Nm cpu out in Q4'9, one mobile,in ALL new westmere. Desk:Clarksdale i5, dual everything. yet gulftown has 12 Mb of Cache. Exclusivity of X58, No Others Allowed.,Gulfie B new 1366 Pin Part, first at TOP End in Westmere. Those Pins Seem to have grown shorter, maybe less breakage & stress.

Is It 32,28,22,~18,13,10,8,5,2 Nm ?World. Shiver Me Timbers.... NEED SOME 28 nm Space Roadmapping, Please. Dancing Girls, Purple Elephants & ?. Seems Toe to Toe with AMD @32nm Vs. Intel @28nm? Little Big Thangies....

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
