I give NV the benefit of the doubt to say they will get one or two design wins.
Folks; One or two design wins doesn't a business make.
Tegra is a burden; seems like they have a good HW core but TERRIBLE software teams working on this. So far they have only ever shown Windows Mobile working and a barely functional Android.
From Day 1 NVIDIA's mobile phone business has not listened to customers (e.g. large Tier 1 handset mfr's) - HASN'T listened to content developers in the mobile space, and hasn't listened to the carriers. They NEVER supported the right OS's (ignored Symbian early on, ignored Nokia, ignored anyone who tried to push a direction for them).
Tegra team needs some new blood and a top down management change - it's failed now for 3 years. The stubborn management team at NVIDIA didn't listen to us handset mfr's and doesn't listen to anyone still...
Designing a chip and getting mfr's to use it are TWO ENTIRE different things. NVIDIA fails at the latter.
AMD may be posting losses, but they also purchased a $4 billion company, which just happened to post a profit this year. This means that their investment is yielding returns. There is nothing wrong with debt, as long as that debt is used to increase your assets, which ATI is doing.
Nvidia on the other hand are posting losses as they are selling their products at below cost to stay competitive, which is not good.
""Nvidia has no debt and billions of cash in the bank. AMD has posted many consecutive quarters of losses. Nvidia has more than two thirds of the GPU discrete market, mobile and desktop. They'll be fine.

Well , Since beck24 says so it must be true no ???
Just look at ALL those bright people working for AIG, and countless firms supposedly making Millions only to later find out they are BANKRUPT!
If I was running NV, I would refocus on the core business and go back to Gfx cards and video games enabling. going for Tegra is like a fly trying to fight a group of Elephants. Got to go after Power6, Itanium, Xeons, Slicon Graphics, IBM, and all the big monsters of super computing , and by the time you get one elephant to blink, Those elephants will come back with plans by their own to run smarter solution than a Graphics card trying to run a computing workload ...
The reason Nvidia has billions in cash and no debt is because most of the time they have been profitable. The reason AMD ATI has huge debts and a long string of losses is because most of the time the last three or four years they were not profitable.
"Nvidia has no debt and billions of cash in the bank. AMD has posted many consecutive quarters of losses. Nvidia has more than two thirds of the GPU discrete market, mobile and desktop. They'll be fine."
Perhaps AMD wouldn't have posted quite so many loses if their competitors didn't resort to selling below cost.
"Huang said the good news, however, was that Nvidia beat analysts' estimates and the firm's inventory dropped from a daunting 144 days to just 64 days sequentially."
(Read as) "Huang said the good news, however, was that Nvidia sold all those bad chips and didn't have to eat the cost of the returns from the suckers they sold them too. Yay us!"

It challenges me how can you sell something at loss and make it up on volume, as the more you sell, your loss get's bigger.
I sincerely wish that nvidia come beck with great products at right price, to boost competition. But nvidia isn't delivering that.
Now with ATI entering 40nm production, nvidia's losses are expected to rise as they will be forced to lower even more it´s prices.
what I've seen of Tegra, it's not a bad hope to grasp. I saw an early Tegra demo and one not too long ago, and was duly impressed by the little bugger's ability to output a high quality video at 720p to a large HDTV & projector with good power ratings.
Should someone stick that in a phone (or just give it a good screen, outputs) and leave a little room for programs by the end user, and it could easily outclass an iPod Phone / Touch.
Sure they sold their products at a loss but they'll make it up on volume.
Clearing that much old inventory could equate a drop in profits but they're being pushed hard, ati is making money and can drop costs. nv is already selling at a loss and it's next new thing is when? Q2 is going to be very interesting.
@beck: i don't think that figure of $222 includes anything else but gpu's. So that doesn't include chipsets and even the Firestream is sold under AMD brand. AMD sold the Imageon departement while nVidia is still selling the GoForce. So if we could know how much of that $664 is coming from gpu's then that comparison would make more sence.
But this loss is not surprising at all. nVidia is selling at much lower margins than ATI to stay competitive. The mammoth GT200's production costs are taking it's toll on the company.
Mercury Research Vs Wall Street Declarations: Hmmm...
nVidia's latest emailshot says clearly "NVIDIA made solid gains with an increase of nearly 3%"
Interesting - given that this data will have been fed (open up, close your nose and try to ignore the flavor!) to Mercury by nVidia to make themselves look good...
...but once they have to face Wall Street - NVIDIA LOSES ARE DECLARED
Hmmm...
Seems that the 'story from Santa Clara' changes according to whether the information being presented will be scruitinised by Sarbanes Oxley ;~)
Currently nV graphics products at all levels have a rep as hot stuff that cracks up (10% returns). Also their mobos are a well known PITA.
nVidia need to tackle these stigmas of unreliability and user unfriendliness (which contribute to a perception of managerial arrogance) before they will have public confidence enough to get the best from Tegra.
How many handsets have been announced with Tegra?

Nvidia still outsells ATI 3 to 1.
$664 million to 222 million in the latest
quarter.
