Rich, our customers have used 1st gen OCTEON for Firewalls, IPS, URL-filtering, ZFS server, DPI, Traffic Generators, Regular Expression Offload, SSL-VPN and WAN optimization. Where they were able to get xGb/sec throughput, they can now get 5-10 xGb/sec throughput. Specially the new area of WiMax and LTE basestations.
We are hoping a increaed demand of software consulting requirements for the OCTEON-II.

Rich: it is optimized for network devices like high speed routers, switches, gateways and the like.
LOL, though if nVidia isn't looking out, it might get pitched as a better streaming GPU thingy.
Very interesting design, what requirements were behind the design decisions?
Thinking how to use; has almost everything to be a complete system, but overkill on some parts, plus MIPS isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Too much power to just be an I/O controller for a desktop, maybe for a server or a cluster?
Having a difficult time figuring out how best to use this chip.
hrmz this could work wonders for my desktop... fold fold fold @home ;-)
Why so worked up, Charlie? Don't want the Man to check out what movies you're downloading?
