First you tantalize them with a nice, tasty looking worm, then you set the hook and reel the suckers in.

Solution? Figure out how much you'd normally pay for the service, then send you favorite Linux distro half that and encourage them to work on that particular idea. If everyone were willing to donate half, or even one-fourth of the normal cost for the free stuff instead, it's quality would eclipse the closed source stuff in a short period of time.
