Nvidia renamed the 8800GT to the 9800GT.
Now its being reincarnated as the GTX250 or wateva.
Would you STILL buy the GTX250 for todays prices if you knew it was 3 year old tech? Ofcourse NOT, this is where the problem lies.
Now ATI have taken their best, and improved it by whatever little margins and gave it a number-name boost.ie.
NOT Posing it as new Tech.
How do you pronounce fanbois? Is it fan-bwah (it would be if it were french). Or do ATI dudes use it in homage to Avril Lavigne's Sk8ter Boi? Go Avril, Go ATI, Go logical arguements. What ATI are doing is different. I'm a GTX 295 owner, loud and proud but ATI are releasing a slightly jigged, very much faster product (than the RV770). It's slightly more ethical than what NV are doing. Well, it's very much more ethical to be honest. Don't know about the name though, the old 49** monicker makes it sound like new tech (just like NV did with 9800GT from 8800GT.) I wont defend NV - though the GTX295 is frankly the dogs bollox - but if we could all stop using Avril Lavigne talk, things would be very much more civil.
fanboise weep period you're getting screwed hard by a dirty, and probablyquitepleasantlysurprisedthattheycangetawaywiththissortofthing (although i guess you don't need that much intelligence to install a graphics card) nvidia period maybe all that hot nvidia love has caused your inability to perceive the rather big difference between a supposed generational change (when in fact nothing has been changed other than the name), and a new in-line sku with a 25% faster core period this article is also more evidence that tsmc are gonna struggle executing 40nm process period i wouldn't be surprised if in, let's say 5 years time, intel dominate the high end as well as the low end graphics market period
As noted before, Nvidia have re-branded old technology as new-gen when the same specifications were released in 2007, hence misleading the average buyer. In this case, ATI have chosen chips from the current range with higher potential and rebranded in the current range of cards. These two cases cannot be compared. Quit the Charlie bashing, start your own bishop bashing instead.
That said...
Nvidia is taking Product #1 and selling it as a all new Product #2. Product #2 is exactly the same as Product #1. no changes, no cherry picking, no improved clocks, not even a better bios. The Cherry picking is to reviewers ONLY. The consumer, you and I, get Product #2, which is really Product #1. Period.
AMD is taking Product #1 and selling it as Product #1.5. Notice the same Nameing #'s? 4870 to a 4970, same #4xxx
same chip, simply revised, nothing new there, standerd buisness practace.
If you cant tell the diffrence, then you should have nothing to say but asking questions.
...and yes, i will still cont. to buy Nvidia. Old habits die hard.
Guys, if you want people to believe that the Inq has a pro-ATI bias you'll have to do better than this. Giving a higher clocked part a slightly higher model number is perfectly legit. Renaming *exactly the same part* to give people the impression its current generation tech is a lot less kosher.
Rebadging an 8800 to 250 seems completely different to me from raising the model number by 100 from 4870 to 4970, after you have increased its clock speed by 200 MHz... Same happened for X1800 and X1900 or X800 and X850.
Nvidia changes the generation, while ATI upps the model.
it supports my conclusion very well, if you also know the history of charlie's accusations thrown about such as nvidia cherry picking parts for retail GTX295. that is exactly what ATI would be doing to create this 4970. everyone does it. so why did it bother charlie that nvidia would probably do it for 295?? i ask you that 'blank'. not only that charlie was smugly gloating about how nvidia were having trouble on 40nm, and that they will just be passing off poor 40nm parts that do not significantly improve performance nor power onsumption. that they may have to stick to 55nm for a while. SOOO......what would ATI be doing if this is true......? yup. exactly the same. thing. so where is the charlie expose? where is the scoffing criticsm for ATI that they will no doubt have to cherry pick these parts for the retail channels? case rests. period.
the similarity plasticman noted above does not support his irresponsible conclusion. it's one thing to rebadge a select bin of your best-performing units as a new, distinct product, capable of higher speeds/performance. it's another thing entirely to rebadge the entireity of your production line as a "new" "improved" "higher-performing" part, and then restrict review authors and samples to a select few in an attempt to paint an unrepresentative picture of your "new" product for the consuming public. i'm not arguing against a pro-ATI/anti-Nvidia bias at this site, but these two articles don't make that case. period.
charlie didnt fancy reporting that ATI are looking at pimping 'old' parts, on the same old process, 'cherry picked' to overclock and claim they are a new product by changing the model name then?
DIDNT THINK SO
ATI here are doing nothing wrong as they like nvidia seem to know the 40nm process is broken. re using perfectly fine, competitive parts. this article is pure gold when sat next to the nvidia slating article yesterday, more proof that charlie is off his rocker. news isnt about ranting against a company, as this article shows

Some of these comments are unbelievable!
In one sentence: The Nvidia funboys deserve these Nvidia practices.
The "rumor" goes on to mention that RV790 is on TSMC's 55nm GT process, so the ASIC is actually different to the 55nm standard...
Suck it up NV whiners ...
Charlie is just telling it how it is.

And a die shrink does not offer any important?
And what about overclocking it on the same die. That increase would mean more heat?
I've never puchased any thing other then Nvidia.

BUT ONLY NVIDIA IS GOING TO MESS UP 40NM TECH! CHARLIE SAID SO!
Ah Mr.Farrel, where are you when news about graphics needs reporting?
Youre far more balanced and truthful.

I am not pro ATI or pro Nvidia.. Since I use both for a long time... But just want to point it out... SOME pro-ATI PEOPLE GOT OWNED.
Yeah, both companies do it, Charlie. Maybe you should put on both lenses.

As the above posters pointed out between how ATI(AMD/UAE) and Nvidia are treated.
But I also wonder how the article would read by Mr Farrell if APPLE was doing this? :)
